Le Sauveur, pressentant toutes les difficultés et toutes les craintes qui pourront encore assaillir le cœur de ses disciples, leur fait part d'une grâce suprême, d'un bien sans lequel il n'y a point pour l'homme de bonheur, avec lequel il ne saurait jamais être malheureux : la paix.

Jésus fait allusion dans ces paroles à la formule de salutation par laquelle les Israélites s'abordaient ou se quittaient. (comme Jean 20.26)

La plupart des commentateurs allemands prennent le mot de paix dans le sens de l'hébreu schalôm, bien-être, prospérité, salut, et pensent que Jésus présente aux siens tous les fruits objectifs de son œuvre, en un mot, le salut éternel. Mais non, ce qu'il leur donne, c'est la paix intérieure d'une âme remplie d'une douce confiance en son Dieu Sauveur.

Ce sens est rendu évident, comme l'observe M. Godet, par les dernières paroles du verset : c'est le cœur des disciples qui doit être préservé du trouble, des tristesses et des craintes que leur inspirait la pensée de rester dans ce monde, seuls, sans leur céleste ami.

Il leur laisse donc la paix, comme le plus précieux des legs à son départ. Il fait plus : il leur donne actuellement et réellement sa paix, la paix inaltérable et profonde dont il jouissait lui-même et qu'il puisait constamment dans la communion de son Père. C'est ainsi qu'il leur fera part encore de sa joie, (Jean 15.11,17.13) car tout ce qui est à lui appartient à ses rachetés.

A la rigueur, on pourrait, avec la plupart de nos versions, traduire ainsi ces mots : Je ne vous la donne pas comme le monde la donne, mais comme ce pronom n'est pas dans l'original, et comme cette pensée supposerait que le monde peut, dans un sens quelconque, donner la paix, nous préférons laisser dans toute sa généralité ce contraste que Jésus établit entre sa manière de donner et celle du monde.

Le monde en est réduit à de vains souhaits, à de trompeuses promesses, souvent intéressées. Jésus donne réellement, abondamment et par l'amour le plus pur. Ces paroles devaient donc inspirer aux disciples la plus entière confiance en lui.

Jésus, à la fin du discours, revient ainsi à son point de départ ; (verset 1) mais c'est après avoir donné aux siens tous les secours les plus puissants pour dissiper le trouble et les craintes qui pouvaient encore assaillir leur cœur.
