Des paroles précédentes qui dépeignent leur position de sarments unis au cep (en moi), découle pour les disciples un devoir absolu que Jésus formule ainsi : demeurez en moi, en renonçant constamment à tout mérite propre, à toute sagesse propre, à toute volonté et à toute force propres, ce qui est la condition d'une communion vivante avec moi. Si vous le faites, je demeurerai en vous, comme la source intarissable de votre vie spirituelle. Sinon, vous vous condamneriez à la stérilité du sarment séparé du cep.

Cette conséquence résulte avec évidence de l'image même employée par Jésus. Jésus établit ainsi clairement la distinction entre la nature et la grâce.
