Cette citation est tirée du Psaumes 78.24. (Comparer Exode 16.4,14-15)

Le pain du ciel doit s'entendre dans le même sens qu'on donne à cette expression : la pluie du ciel. On lit, en effet, dans le Psaume cité (traduction grecque) : "Et il fit pleuvoir pour eux la manne à manger, et il leur donna un pain du ciel." (L'hébreu dit : du froment du ciel.)

Les Juifs regardaient le miracle de la manne comme le plus grand de leur histoire, et ils attendaient que le Messie ferait plus encore que ce qui avait eu lieu sous le ministère de Moïse, type du Messie. On cite cet adage des rabbins : "Le premier Libérateur a fait descendre pour eux la manne ; de même aussi le dernier Libérateur fera descendre la manne."
