Le ministère du prophète a une origine divine et éternelle. L'élection de Jérémie comprend trois actes divins qui ont précédé sa naissance.

  1. Il a été connu : Dieu connaît toutes ses créatures de toute éternité sans doute ; mais il discerne d'avance avec amour ceux qui seront ses fidèles (Romains 8.29-30)
  2. Il a été consacré, ou sanctifié ; mis à part dans le conseil de Dieu en vue d'un ministère spécial.
  3. Il a été, établi : Dieu l'a revêtu d'avance des pouvoirs nécessaires pour remplir une pareille charge.
Ce passage présente une analogie frappante avec Galates 1.15 et Romains 1.1, où Paul rappelle sa vocation à l'apostolat. Il y a donc, en dedans de la vocation générale des fidèles an salut (Romains 8.29), les vocations à des ministères particuliers (Esaïe, Jérémie, Paul).

Prophète des nations, et non pas seulement de Juda. Jéhova étant le Dieu de toute la terre, les prophètes de Jéhova se sentaient chargés d'une mission universelle. La dernière partie du livre de Jérémie (chapitres 46 à 51) concerne en effet les nations païennes qui environnaient Israël.
