Moïse et Samuel, les deux grands intercesseurs des temps passés. Comparez Exode 33.1-23 et 1Samuel 12.23. Ils sont nommés ensemble Psaumes 99.6-8. Comparez Ezéchiel 14.14-20. Dieu a bien vu que les sentiments et les désirs exprimés par le prophète étaient les siens personnellement, mais non ceux du peuple qui reste toujours le même.

De devant ma face : à la fois de la Terre Sainte et de l'alliance divine ; car c'était en Canaan que l'alliance devait se réaliser.

L'Éternel déclare que même la présence de Moïse et de Samuel serait vaine, pour tenter de plaider en faveur du peuple. Ce texte montre bien que malgré le fait que les enfants d'Israël se tenaient devant l'Éternel, ils n'étaient pas vraiment en communion avec Lui ; cela prouve également que les saints dans le ciel, ne prient pas pour les âmes ici-bas.

Les juifs étaient condamnés à subir différentes sortes de calamités par le biais de la Justice et du Jugement divins ; le reste du peuple allait être mené ça et là en captivité, comme des ballots de paille. Ainsi, la ville de Jérusalem, auparavant si peuplée, allait connaître la désolation. Les mauvais exemples et abus d'autorité, ont souvent des conséquences fatales, même après que leurs auteurs soient morts, ou se soient repentis de leurs crimes : ceci devrait nous faire considérablement redouter d'être à l'origine du péché des autres.
