Moloch, plus exactement Molec (roi) ; chez les Ammonites Milcom ; une des formes du dieu Baal ; divinité très populaire chez les peuples sémitiques. Voir sur ce culte Jérémie 7.31 ; 32.35 ; Ezéchiel 16.20 ; 23.37. Sacrifier un enfant à Moloch, c'est profaner le nom de l'Eternel auquel il appartient et dont on déclare la bénédiction impuissante, en recherchant à un pareil prix le secours d'une autre divinité. Faire passer pourrait s'entendre d'une simple lustration à travers le feu ; mais plusieurs passages parlent en faveur d'une complète combustion ; ainsi Jérémie 7.31. Cependant il semble résulter de Ezéchiel 16.20 ; Psaumes 106.37 ; Esaïe 57.5, que l'on commençait par égorger les enfants avant de les brûler. Il est difficile de comprendre ce qui amène cette défense au milieu de toutes celles qui précèdent et suivent. D'après une antique tradition, le but serait la prohibition des mariages mixtes avec les femmes ammonites qui auraient exigé que le premier enfant né d'un tel mariage fût consacré à Moloch.
