La seconde partie de ce verset explique la première.

Selon les notions de l'Ancien Testament, être juste, c'est conformer sa conduite et sa vie aux prescriptions de la loi de Dieu. (Jean 1.48)

Le terme devant Dieu (Genèse 7.1) est un hébraïsme qui exprime la réalité de cette justice, car il signifie que Dieu la reconnaît et l'approuve.

Cette justice, ainsi que le mot irréprochable, n'exclut point le péché, (Philippiens 3.6) et n'est point opposée à la grande doctrine biblique de la justification par la foi. Les Israélites pieux le savaient bien, puisqu'ils recouraient sans cesse aux moyens prescrits par la loi elle-même pour obtenir le pardon de leurs péchés et pour s'en purifier.

- Calvin et, après lui, Bengel ont fait entre les commandements et les ordonnances du Seigneur cette distinction, que les premiers signifieraient les préceptes de la loi morale, le Décalogue, tandis que les secondes indiqueraient les prescriptions relatives à la loi cérémonielle, au culte, etc.

Il n'est pas sûr que cette distinction soit fondée, car le mot traduit par ordonnance signifie proprement : ce que Dieu a déclaré juste, ce que Paul appelle le droit de Dieu. (Romains 1.32)
