Luc assigne à la priÚre du Seigneur une place tout autre que Matthieu (Matthieu 6.9 et suivants) Selon ce dernier, elle fait partie du sermon sur la montagne, tandis que, d'aprÚs notre évangéliste, elle fut enseignée plus tard à la demande expresse d'un disciple.

Un grand nombre d'excellents exégÚtes (Calvin, Ebrard, de Wette, Olshausen, Neander, Godet) en ont conclu que Matthieu, selon son habitude de grouper certains enseignements homogÚnes du Sauveur, avait librement introduit cette priÚre dans le discours sur la montagne, tandis que Luc lui assigne sa vraie place. Cette opinion peut s'appuyer sur plus d'un fait semblable. Mais est-il vrai que cette priÚre soit déplacée dans le sermon sur la montagne ?

Dans ces instructions sur les diverses manifestations de la piété, l'aumÎne, la priÚre, le jeûne, aprÚs avoir condamné les priÚres hypocrites, faites avec ostentation, et en "usant de vaines redites," n'était-il pas tout naturel que Jésus ajoutùt : "Vous, mes disciples, priez ainsi," et que, au milieu de la foule qui l'entourait, les yeux levés vers le ciel, il prononçùt d'un ton pénétré cette priÚre si profonde dans sa simplicité, si riche dans sa briÚveté ? Nul n'en aurait jamais douté, sans le récit de Luc qui nous occupe.

Mais ce récit nous oblige-t-il à rejeter celui de Matthieu ? Nullement, à moins qu'on n'admette que jamais Jésus n'ait pu, en des circonstances différentes, redire quelques-unes de ses paroles les plus importantes. Or, les évangiles nous présentent des exemples nombreux de paroles prononcées à diverses reprises.

Pourquoi Jésus n'aurait-il pas répondu à ce disciple qui lui demandait de lui enseigner à prier, en répétant cette admirable priÚre, qu'il présente du reste dans une forme différente et quelque peu abrégée ?

Ainsi l'ont admis Tholuck, Meyer, Stier, Gess et d'autres, qui voient une confirmation de leur opinion dans le fait que Matthieu seul nous a conservé dans sa plénitude cet inimitable modÚle de priÚre.
