L'entretien qui va suivre rappelle les dialogues des morts chez les anciens. Tout y est image, mais ces images représentent des réalités.

Le riche reconnaît Abraham et Lazare. Ce trait montre que la personnalité subsiste dans le monde invisible et que les âmes ont des rapports entre elles. Du reste, le but de ce verset est de faire ressortir la transformation totale qui s'est opérée dans la situation des deux hommes : le riche est devenu un mendiant, et c'est Lazare qu'il implore.

- Il faut se garder de matérialiser, comme on l'a fait trop souvent, ces flammes, qui ne sont que l'image de la souffrance morale. Les convoitises et les passions, jusque-là pleinement satisfaites, se changent en tourments, dès que tout aliment leur est ôté ; et tandis que le cœur est vide, le feu des regrets et des remords brûle dans la conscience.
