Ces mots dès lors Jésus commença (Sin. et B ont : Jésus-Christ) marquent une époque importante dans les révélations que Jésus fait à ses disciples sur la nature de son œuvre.

Jusqu'alors il n'y avait eu dans ses discours que des allusions vagues et obscures à ses souffrances et à sa mort. (Matthieu 10.38, note ; Jean 2.19 ; 3.14 ; comparez Jean 1.29,36) Maintenant que ses disciples ont cru en lui et l'ont confessé comme le Christ, le Fils de Dieu, il peut leur en parler ouvertement, et même il le doit, afin de dissiper si possible dans leur esprit les fausses idées messianiques qu'ils entretenaient encore, et de les préparer à partager ses humiliations et ses douleurs.

Marc (Marc 8.31) et Luc (Luc 9.20-22) mettent aussi cette prédiction dans un rapport direct avec la confession de Pierre. Marc ajoute (Marc 8.32) qu'il leur dit ouvertement (grec librement, hardiment) cette parole. C'est quand la vraie foi est née que le chrétien doit s'attendre à la contradiction et à la souffrance.

Quant à Jésus, il le fallait, dit-il. Mystérieuse nécessité, fondée sur le décret de la justice et de la miséricorde de Dieu, annoncé dans les Ecritures. Il le fallait, à moins que le monde ne dût périr dans son péché. C'est ce que Dieu ne voulait pas, et Jésus accepte par amour la volonté de son Père. (Matthieu 26.39 comparez Matthieu 26.54 ; Luc 24.26,Jean 3.14)

- Le sanhédrin était composé de ces trois classes d'hommes : les anciens, les grands sacrificateurs et les scribes, ou docteurs de la loi. Il y a quelque chose de solennel dans la manière dont Jésus les nomme en détail et les voit conjurés contre lui pour le mettre à mort (grec le tuer). Ce sera là la rupture tragique de la théocratie avec le Messie et son règne !

Après la défaite, le triomphe, après la mort, la vie ! Si l'une de ces prédictions devait accabler les disciples, l'autre était destinée à les relever. Mais ici la critique trouve une pierre d'achoppement, et l'on ne peut nier qu'il n'y ait une difficulté. Comment se fait-il, demande-t-on, si Jésus a prédit si clairement sa résurrection à ses disciples, que ceux-ci n'en aient plus eu aucune idée après sa mort, et mêmes soient refusés à y croire, jusqu'à ce qu'ils l'eussent vu, vivant, de leurs yeux ?

Ne pouvant résoudre la question, les uns ont révoqué en doute la prédiction, d'autres (Meyer par exemple) ont supposé que cette prédiction avait été vague et obscure (comme dans les passages cités à la note précédente) ou formulée dans le langage poétique de l'Ancien Testament (Psaumes 118.17 ; comparez Osée 6.2), et qu'elle avait revêtu, après l'événement, dans la tradition apostolique, le caractère positif et clair qu'elle porte ici.

Mais les évangélistes eux-mêmes ne nous donnent-ils pas le mot de l'énigme ? Ils nous apprennent que, tout remplis encore de leur préjugé juif concernant un Messie glorieux, ils ne comprirent absolument rien à cette prédiction de ses souffrances et de sa résurrection. (Marc 9.32 ; Luc 18.34) Or, ce qu'on ne comprend pas ne se grave pas dans le souvenir.

L'exemple de Pierre (verset 22) prouve qu'il entend mieux les paroles de Jésus, mais qu'il refuse avec décision d'entrer dans sa pensée. Comment donc un événement aussi extraordinaire que la résurrection ne leur aurait-il pas paru incroyable ? Et alors même qu'ils n'auraient pas manqué à ce point de l'intelligence de ce mystère, n'y a-t-il pas une immense distance entre comprendre et croire ?

Christ révèle graduellement à Ses disciples, ce qu’Il allait subir. Dès le moment où les apôtres furent pleinement convaincus que Christ était vraiment le Fils de Dieu, Jésus commença à leur parler de Ses souffrances à venir : Il s’exprima ainsi pour éviter à Ses disciples de se méprendre quant aux manifestations de Sa Puissance de Son Royaume.

Ceux qui suivent Christ ne doivent pas s'attendre à découvrir des « signes extraordinaires » en ce monde. Pierre appréhendait de savoir que Jésus allait souffrir : en fait, nous nous trompons si, comme l’apôtre, nous évaluons l'Amour et la Patience de Christ selon nos propres critères.

Mis à part le contenu des versets Matthieu 16:22,23, on ne trouve nulle part ailleurs, dans l’Écriture, une parole ou un acte commis par les disciples, qui ait à ce point contrarié Christ.

Quiconque considère que tout ce qui émane de notre personne est bon et qui est convaincu de trop agir pour Dieu, parle en fait le « langage de Satan ». Tout ce qui nous paraît être une tentation menant au péché, doit être repoussé avec horreur, et ne doit pas être suivi. Ceux qui refusent de souffrir pour Christ, sont plus près des hommes que de Dieu...
