1 In that hour the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Who then is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?"2 Jesus called a little child to himself, and set him in their midst,3 and said, "Most certainly I tell you, unless you turn, and become as little children, you will in no way enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.4 Whoever therefore humbles himself as this little child, the same is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.5 Whoever receives one such little child in my name receives me,Sérieuse mise en garde

10 See that you don't despise one of these little ones, for I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.11 For the Son of Man came to save that which was lost.12 "What do you think? 21 Then Peter came and said to him, "Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Until seven times?"22 Jesus said to him, "I don't tell you until seven times, but, until seventy times seven.23 Therefore the Kingdom of Heaven is like a certain king, who wanted to reconcile accounts with his servants.24 When he had begun to reconcile, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.25 But because he couldn't pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, with his wife, his children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.26 The servant therefore fell down and kneeled before him, saying, 'Lord, have patience with me, and I will repay you all!'27 The lord of that servant, being moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt.28 "But that servant went out, and found one of his fellow servants, who owed him one hundred denarii, and he grabbed him, and took him by the throat, saying, 'Pay me what you owe!'29 "So his fellow servant fell down at his feet and begged him, saying, 'Have patience with me, and I will repay you!'30 He would not, but went and cast him into prison, until he should pay back that which was due.31 So when his fellow servants saw what was done, they were exceedingly sorry, and came and told to their lord all that was done.32 Then his lord called him in, and said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt, because you begged me.33 Shouldn't you also have had mercy on your fellow servant, even as I had mercy on you?'34 His lord was angry, and delivered him to the tormentors, until he should pay all that was due to him.35 So my heavenly Father will also do to you, if you don't each forgive your brother from your hearts for his misdeeds." -

10 Prenez garde de ne mépriser aucun de ces petits ; car je vous dis que dans les cieux leurs anges voient sans cesse la face de mon Père qui est aux cieux.11 Car le Fils de l'homme est venu pour sauver ce qui était perdu.12 Que vous en semble ? Si un homme a cent brebis, et qu'il y en ait une égarée, ne laisse-t-il pas les quatre-vingt-dix-neuf sur les montagnes, pour s'en aller chercher celle qui s'est égarée ?13 Et s'il arrive qu'il la trouve, je vous dis en vérité qu'il en a plus de joie, que des quatre-vingt-dix-neuf qui ne se sont point égarées.14 Ainsi la volonté de votre Père qui est aux cieux n'est pas qu'un seul de ces petits se perde.Quand un frère se rend coupable

21 Alors Pierre, s'étant approché, lui dit : Seigneur, combien de fois pardonnerai-je à mon frère, lorsqu'il péchera contre moi ?22 Sera-ce jusqu'à sept fois ? Jésus lui répondit : Je ne te dis pas jusqu'à sept fois, mais jusqu'à septante fois sept fois.23 C'est pourquoi le royaume des cieux est semblable à un roi qui voulut compter avec ses serviteurs.24 Quand il eut commencé de compter, on lui en amena un qui lui devait dix mille talents ;25 Et parce qu'il n'avait pas de quoi payer, son maître commanda qu'il fût vendu, lui, sa femme et ses enfants, et tout ce qu'il avait, afin que la dette fût payée.26 Et ce serviteur, se jetant à terre, le suppliait, en disant : Seigneur, aie patience envers moi, et je te payerai tout.27 Alors le maître de ce serviteur, ému de compassion, le laissa aller, et lui remit la dette.28 Mais ce serviteur, étant sorti, rencontra un de ses compagnons de service, qui lui devait cent deniers, et, l'ayant saisi, il l'étranglait, en disant : Paye-moi ce que tu me dois.29 Et son compagnon de service, se jetant à ses pieds, le suppliait, en disant : Aie patience envers moi, et je te payerai tout.30 Mais lui ne le voulut point, et, s'en étant allé, le fit jeter en prison, jusqu'à ce qu'il eût payé la dette.31 Ses compagnons de service, voyant ce qui s'était passé, en furent fort attristés ; et ils vinrent rapporter à leur maître tout ce qui était arrivé.32 Alors son maître le fit venir et lui dit : Méchant serviteur, je t'avais remis toute cette dette, parce que tu m'en avais prié ;33 Ne te fallait-il pas aussi avoir pitié de ton compagnon de service, comme j'avais eu pitié de toi ?34 Et son maître, étant irrité, le livra aux sergents, jusqu'à ce qu'il eût payé tout ce qu'il lui devait.35 C'est ainsi que vous fera mon Père céleste, si vous ne pardonnez pas, chacun de vous, de tout son cour, à son frère ses fautes.

En cette heure-là désigne le moment qui suivit le récit précédent.
- La question des disciples pouvait avoir été occasionnée par la distinction accordée à Pierre (Matthieu 16.18) et à deux de ses condisciples. (Matthieu 17.1)
D'après Marc (Marc 9.33 et suivants) et Luc, (Luc 9.46 et suivants) ils discutaient entre eux la question, et c'est Jésus qui leur demande le sujet de leur entretien.
La question suppose que les disciples en étaient encore à l'idée d'un royaume terrestre, glorieux, dans lequel tels d'entre eux occuperaient la première place, seraient plus grands (grec) que les autres.
Mais la réponse de Jésus montre qu'il voit se manifester dans leur discussion une préoccupation égoïste et orgueilleuse.
Les pauvres disciples n'en furent pas guéris par l'instruction qui va suivre (Comparer Luc 22.24)

Beaucoup aiment entendre parler de privilèges et de gloire, que ce soit dans leur travail ou leurs épreuves éventuelles. Notre Seigneur mit un petit enfant devant Ses disciples, leur assurant solennellement qu’ils ne pouvaient entrer dans Son royaume à moins qu'ils ne se convertissent et ne deviennent comme ce petit. Quand ils sont très jeunes, les enfants ne désirent pas exercer d’autorité, ils ne sont pas spécialement sensibles aux distinctions extérieures, ils sont exempt de toute malice, ils peuvent être enseignés et acceptent volontiers de dépendre de leurs parents. Il est vrai qu'ils commencent rapidement à montrer d'autres dispositions et d'autres idées, dès qu’ils grandissent ; mais ces « marques » de la prime enfance peuvent tout à fait être des exemples d’humilité pour les véritables chrétiens.
Il est certain que nous avons quotidiennement besoin d'être renouvelés spirituellement, afin de rester simples, humbles, comme de petits enfants, disposés à être le plus petit parmi notre entourage. Poursuivons chaque jour ce but, examinons notre âme !
