Démonstration suprême du principe que Jésus vient de poser pour son royaume.

Le fils de l'homme (voir sur ce terme Matthieu 8.20, note) qui a fondé ce royaume, donna lui-même l'exemple de l'esprit qui devait y régner. Bien éloigné des dispositions qu'il combattait dans le cœur de ses disciples, et répudiant l'autorité des grands de ce monde, il ne voulut pas être servi. Sa vie entière fut consacrée au service de ses frères.

Son dévouement alla jusqu'au sacrifice de sa vie (Philippiens 2.8) Cette vie sainte, il voulut la donner, terme choisi à dessein, car il la donna comme une rançon, c'est-à-dire comme le prix qu'on payait pour racheter des esclaves ou des prisonniers de guerre. (Comparer 1Corinthiens 6.20,7.23)

Ce mot se retrouve toujours, en grec, dans le terme que nous traduisons par rédemption, qui signifie rachat par le moyen d'une rançon. Ce prix d'une valeur infinie fut payé pour plusieurs (grec à la place de plusieurs).

Le mot plusieurs fait contraste avec un seul qui s'est substitué à eux ; car c'est pour tous qu'il a donné sa vie. (Romains 5.18 ; Colossiens 1.20 ; 1Jean 2.2 ; Hébreux 2.9)

Cette déclaration solennelle, sortie de la bouche de Jésus lui-même, indique clairement le but expiatoire et rédempteur de sa mort.
