Les veaux..., littéralement : les génisses, terme plus méprisant que le masculin. Mais pourquoi le pluriel ? Peut-être y avait-il à Béthel (Beth-Aven, 4.15, note) quelque autre veau d'or que celui que Jéroboam I y avait fait dresser ; on bien n'est-ce ici qu'un pluriel désignant l'espèce : lui et tous ceux de sa sorte ? Le prophète penserait à celui de Dan. Quoi qu'il en soit, le singulier revient aussitôt après : sur lui... pour lui. Osée se transporte par la pensée au moment où déjà le veau d'or ne sera plus là.

Son peuple... Le peuple de Samarie, prêtres et habitants, tremblent pour ce pauvre veau que menace l'invasion de l'ennemi ; quel dieu que celui pour la sûreté duquel se tourmentent ainsi ses adorateurs !

Sa gloire : la majesté divine qu'ils lui attribuent.

Ses prêtres..., en hébreu : camarim, mot qui ne se retrouve que 2Rois 23.5 et Sophonie 1.4, et qui, en syriaque, signifie prêtre. En passant dans la langue hébraïque, ce terme a pris le sens défavorable de faux prêtre ou magicien ; car les prêtres qui venaient de Syrie avaient ce caractère.
