Maintenant, pour tout le temps de l'épreuve, bien que les autres dons doivent cesser, demeurent ces trois éléments de la vie chrétienne : la foi, qui, dans les choses religieuses, est la source de toute connaissance vraie, saisit comme présents les biens qui nous sont révélés et offerts en Jésus-Christ, et possède dès icibas, dans la mesure de son développement, ce dont nous jouirons complètement quand cette foi aura été changée en vue.

L'espérance, qui repose sur la foi, n'en diffère qu'en tant qu'elle est entièrement dirigée vers l'avenir, vers la délivrance, vers la perfection. Elle est le vif sentiment que "ce que nous serons n'a pas encore été manifesté," et que cette "manifestation des enfants de Dieu" est aussi nécessaire à notre perfection qu'elle est certaine d'après les promesses de Dieu. La foi rassasie ; (Jean 6.35) l'espérance donne la faim ; (Romains 8.19-25) l'une et l'autre sont nécessaires à notre avancement dans la vie intérieure. Par la foi, nous avons communion avec Christ, paix avec Dieu, accès auprès de lui ; l'espérance maintient en nous le sentiment que nous n'avons encore que les arrhes de ce qui nous est réservé, (2Corinthiens 1.22, note) elle est un perpétuel soupir vers l'infini et la perfection.

La charité est au-dessus de l'une et de l'autre, non seulement parce qu'elle subsistera quand la foi sera changée en vue et que l'espérance sera accomplie ; (verset 8, note) mais encore parce que la charité est l'âme, la vie de l'espérance et de la foi. La charité, c'est Dieu en nous ; et Dieu sera tout en tous.

- Par cette exposition, le but de l'apôtre est admirablement rempli : la foi, par où il n'entend plus ici (comme 1Corinthiens 12.9 ; 13.2) un don extraordinaire et passager, mais le moyen permanent de la vie chrétienne ; l'espérance, qui est comme la jouissance anticipée du ciel, sont certainement supérieures aux dons miraculeux les plus distingués. Et pourtant la charité est plus grande encore que la foi et que l'espérance ! Quelle leçon pour ces Corinthiens qui s'élevaient à leurs propres yeux par l'excellence de leurs dons, en oubliant les uns envers les autres les plus simples obligations de la charité ! Cette leçon, au reste, est indispensable à recueillir dans tous les temps.

- Quelques exégètes prennent le mot maintenant, non comme une désignation du temps présent, mais comme une conclusion logique, et pensent que le verbe demeurent assigne une durée perpétuelle, éternelle à la foi et à l'espérance, aussi bien qu'à la charité. Ces trois dons de la grâce seraient, même dans le ciel, les éléments d'un développement indéfini de l'âme. Mais qui peut concevoir la foi et l'espérance là où est la vue et la possession ? Paul lui-même n'a-t-il pas répondu à cette question ? (Romains 8.24)
