Amos 9.11,12.

Jacques, comme tous les apôtres, tient à montrer l'accord de ses affirmations avec les paroles des prophètes.

Ainsi, il trouve la conversion des païens annoncée dans cette prophétie d'Amos, qui, en un temps malheureux de l'histoire d'Israël, promet le rétablissement de la maison de David, de sa dynastie, de son royaume spirituel.

Cette maison n'était plus alors, aux yeux du prophète, qu'un tabernacle, une frêle tente, tombée en ruine, parce que dix tribus du peuple s'étaient séparées d'elles.

Mais il viendra des temps où Dieu la réédifiera, la rétablira dans son antique splendeur. Et alors le reste des hommes, toutes les nations païennes sur lesquelles le nom de Dieu sera invoqué, rechercheront le Seigneur et seront reçues en grâce, sans autres conditions.

C'est ce que dit le Seigneur qui, maintenant, fait ces choses, qui sont connues de lui de toute éternité.

Jacques cita cette prophétie dans la langue originale. Luc la rapporte librement d'après la version grecque.

Celle-ci diffère à divers égards de l'hébreu, dont voici la traduction littérale : "En ce jour-là, je relèverai la tente de David qui est tombée ; je réparerai ses brèches ; je relèverai ses ruines et je la rebâtirai comme aux jours anciens, afin qu'ils possèdent le reste d'Edom et toutes les nations sur lesquelles mon nom est invoqué, dit l'Eternel, qui fait cela."

On voit les deux principales différences entre l'hébreu et la version grecque. Celle-ci porte : le reste des hommes, au lieu de le reste d'Edom.

Ensuite, les traducteurs Grecs transforment l'affirmation que les Israélites posséderont les nations en celle-ci : les nations rechercheront le Seigneur, pensée qui n'est pas dans l'hébreu. Ils avaient évidemment sous les yeux un texte différent de notre texte hébreu actuel. Et l'on peut se demander s'il n'en était pas de même pour Jacques, car la parole d'Amos, telle que nous la lisons aujourd'hui dans les bibles hébraïques, ne renferme que très indirectement la prophétie que Jacques invoque.
