Le mot grec, auquel nous avons laissé son sens premier : il rendit témoignage, signifie aussi : adjurer en prenant Dieu à témoin. (1Timothée 5.21) Plusieurs interprètes lui donnent ici ce sens : il les conjurait et les exhortait.

Mais le sens de rendre témoignage, qui est plus habituel dans le livre des Actes (Actes 8.25 ; 10.42, comparez Luc 16.28), nous paraît s'imposer à cause du changement de temps du verbe ; à l'aoriste : il rendit témoignage succède l'imparfait : il les exhortait.

Le pronom les ne dépend donc que de ce dernier verbe ; le premier doit être pris sans régime.

Le témoignage que rendit l'apôtre par plusieurs autres paroles ou discours avait pour objet la vérité divine qu'il venait d'annoncer.

Comme conséquence pratique, il pressait ses auditeurs de se séparer moralement de cette génération perverse qui avait crucifié son Messie, afin de ne pas périr avec elle sous les jugements de Dieu. (versets 19-21)

De là ce mot énergique : (grec) Soyez sauvés du milieu d'elle !
