21 à 45 Le règne et les persécutions d'Antiochus Epiphane.

21 à 27 Les premières guerres de ce roi contre l'Egypte.

Un homme dédaigné : Antiochus IV, frère de Séleucus. Par opposition au surnom d'Epiphane (illustre) qui lui fut donné par ses flatteurs, l'auteur lui applique l'épithète de dédaigné, peu considéré. On peut rapprocher de cette qualification l'expression : une petite corne (8.9) et le surnom d'Epimane (le fou) que, au témoignage de Polybe, ses sujets substituèrent à celui d'Epiphane. Il ne parvint pas à la majesté royaume par droit de naissance ; mais, ayant appris la mort de son frère Séleucus en revenant de Rome, il sut par des artifices et des flatteries s'emparer de la royauté, en supplantant l'héritier légitime, son neveu Démétrius, retenu à Rome comme otage.

      4 They gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal Berith, with which Abimelech hired vain and light fellows, who followed him.
