1 à 3 Ces trois versets font encore partie de la révélation de l'ange commencée 11.2. Ils annoncent la délivrance finale à laquelle aboutiront les tribulations d'Israël. La narration prophétique avait décrit au chapitre 11 le règne d'Antiochus jusqu'à sa mort ; elle revient maintenant au sort du peuple juif.

Et dans ce temps-là se lèvera Micaël. Ce champion d'Israël (10.13, note) se dressera comme un guerrier pour prendre en main la cause de son peuple opprimé. C'est ici une intervention d'une tout autre nature que celle dont il était question 10.13,21, celle-ci avait un caractère en quelque sorte diplomatique ; celle du chapitre 12 s'exerce avec une victorieuse puissance.

A quelle grande manifestation divine se rapporte cette intervention de Micaël ? Nous trouvons ici deux classes d'interprètes. Les uns prennent à la lettre les premiers mots : dans ce temps-là, et rapportent en conséquence la victoire remportée par le secours de Micaël aux triomphes des Maccabées sur les troupes syriennes à la suite de la mort d'Antiochus ; triomphes qui furent suivis du plein affranchissement de la nation juive, du rétablissement du culte de l'Eternel et de la purification du temple. D'autres, en raison de tout ce qui va suivre au chapitre 12 (la résurrection des morts et le jugement final, versets 2 et 3), appliquent cette victoire de Micaël aux dernières luttes de l'humanité sur la terre, à la révolte suprême de l'Antéchrist et à la victoire du royaume de Dieu sur cet ennemi. Pour cela ils doivent donner aux mots en ce temps-là un sens très étendu, comprenant toute l'histoire du monde depuis les victoires des Maccabées jusqu'aux derniers temps de l'histoire, et, pour motiver cette extension, attribuer déjà aux événements décrits dans tout le chapitre 11 un sens typique, d'après lequel la lutte d'Israël contre les Syriens représenterait celle de l'Eglise contre le dernier adversaire.

Et ce sera un temps de détresse. Dans la première interprétation, il s'agit de la dévastation du pays durant la guerre contre les Syriens qui occupaient tout le pays. L'expression ne paraîtra pas exagérée si l'on se rappelle qu'Antiochus s'était proposé pour but d'anéantir la religion israélite afin d'y substituer le culte païen et d'exterminer toute la partie fidèle du peuple ; comparez 1 Maccabées 3.35 et suivants.

Dans la seconde interprétation, il est facile de comprendre que le temps de la domination de l'Antéchrist amènera sur l'Eglise des souffrances qui surpasseront même celles des premières persécutions. Jésus s'est servi des mêmes termes pour caractériser les calamités qui signaleront la ruine de Jérusalem par les Romains (Matthieu 24.21).

Et en ce temps-là. Ces mots annoncent le résultat auquel aboutira l'intervention de Micaël.

Ton peuple échappera. Le peuple qui semblait voué à une ruine certaine, non seulement sera délivré de la main de l'oppresseur, mais arrivera en même temps au salut définitif. Ce ne sera pas cependant le peuple entier qui aura ce privilège, mais seulement quiconque sera trouvé inscrit dans le livre. Le livre n'est pas le livre de vérité mentionné 10.21, où sont consignés les décrets divins ; c'est le livre de vie où sont inscrits à l'avance les noms des membres du royaume de Dieu ; comparez. Esaïe 4.3, note, Dieu connaît ceux qui seront aptes à hériter de la vie éternelle.

Ceux qui acceptent la première des deux interprétations mentionnées doivent admettre qu'en s'exprimant comme il le fait ici, l'auteur a fait aboutir directement la victoire des Maccabées aux derniers temps et à la consommation du règne de Dieu par la résurrection et le jugement.

Le nom Michael signifie, « qui est comme Dieu » et ce nom, avec le titre « de grand Chef », confirme l'analogie avec le Sauveur divin. Christ, par Son sacrifice, s'est donné pour racheter Ses enfants, Il a été fait « malédiction » pour eux, Il a tout supporté. Il s'est fait « avocat » pour eux, devant le trône de la grâce. Après la destruction de l'antichrist, aux derniers jours, le Seigneur Jésus se tiendra sur la terre ; Il apparaîtra pour le rachat parfait de tout Son peuple. Quand Dieu œuvre pour la délivrance de Ses enfants persécutés, Il les fait passer de la mort à la vie.

Quand Son évangile sera prêché aux temps décrits dans ce texte, beaucoup de ceux qui dorment dans la terre, les juifs comme les Gentils, seront alors tirés de leur sommeil. À la fin de ces temps, la multitude de ceux qui dorment dans la poussière se réveillera : les uns pour la vie éternelle, et d'autres pour la honte.

Il y une gloire réservée pour tous les saints, dans l'éternité, pour tous ceux qui ont aimé la Sagesse, la Sagesse éternelle pour leur âme. Ceux qui se tournent résolument vers la droiture, qui signalent aux pécheurs leurs erreurs de cheminement, en les aidant à sauver leur âme de la mort, Jacques 5:20, partageront avec ces derniers, la gloire éternelle dans le ciel.

      Apocalypse 17

      14 These will war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings. They also will overcome who are with him, called and chosen and faithful."

      Apocalypse 19

      11 I saw the heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and he who sat on it is called Faithful and True. In righteousness he judges and makes war.
      12 His eyes are a flame of fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has names written and a name written which no one knows but he himself.
      13 He is clothed in a garment sprinkled with blood. His name is called "The Word of God."
      14 The armies which are in heaven followed him on white horses, clothed in white, pure, fine linen.
      15 Out of his mouth proceeds a sharp, double-edged sword, that with it he should strike the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod. He treads the winepress of the fierceness of the wrath of God, the Almighty.
      16 He has on his garment and on his thigh a name written, "KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS."

      Apocalypse 20

      12 I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and they opened books. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged out of the things which were written in the books, according to their works.
      15 If anyone was not found written in the book of life, he was cast into the lake of fire.
