Car motive l'exhortation verset 5 : elle est opportune ; car Israël a laissé son Dieu, et celui-ci l'a abandonné.

Pleins de l'Orient. L'Orient désigne ici, en opposition aux Philistins à l'ouest, les pays situés à l'est de Canaan (Arabie, Syrie, Assyrie, Chaldée). Israël adopte l'idolâtrie et les mœurs de ces contrées. Cette influence étrangère se faisait sentir déjà depuis le temps de Salomon, qui avait ouvert le pays au commerce de l'Orient et bâti des autels aux dieux de Moab, d'Ammon, etc. (1Rois 10.14-15 ; 11.5-7). Au temps d'Esaïe, les règnes d'Ozias et de Jotham avaient été marqués par une nouvelle invasion des mœurs païennes, et l'on sait ce que fit Achaz pour introduire le paganisme dans ses Etats. Magiciens. Comparez 8.19 ; 2Rois 21.6. La Chaldée est la patrie des arts occultes, que la loi condamnait sous toutes leurs formes (Deutéronome 18.10-11) ; ils étaient pratiqués depuis longtemps chez les Philistins (1Samuel 6.2 ; 2Rois 1.2).

Ils donnent la main, c'est-à-dire, font alliance. On contractait alliance en se frappant dans la main. Salomon avait recherché l'alliance de l'Egypte (1Rois 3.1) ; Asa celle de la Syrie (1Rois 15.18) ; Achaz s'alliera aux Assyriens ; Ezéchias à l 'Egypte. C'était là manquer de confiance en Dieu et, par un contact trop intime avec le paganisme, exposer le peuple aux plus graves dangers.
