Le prophète modifie l'image pour introduire ici un nouveau trait : non seulement le serviteur souffre d'infirmités qui provoquent le mépris et l'incrédulité, mais la haine de son peuple s'acharne contre lui, et il finit par succomber à une mort violente (comparez 50.6-7 ; Zacharie 12.10). Cette mort est voulue de Dieu (verset 6) ; c'est un châtiment, mais non, comme on l'avait cru, celui de ses propres fautes (voir verset 6).

Le châtiment qui nous donne la paix, littéralement : le châtiment de notre paix, c'est-à-dire par lequel nous obtenons le salut, la paix avec Dieu.

Guéris : c'est nous qui étions les véritables lépreux (verset 1). Comparez 1Pierre 2.24.
