C'est ici l'endroit le plus saint des lieux consacrés au culte israélite, parce que c'est celui où Dieu se manifeste à son peuple et, après lui avoir fait connaître sa volonté générale par les tables de la loi, lui révèle ses volontés particulières. C'est pour ainsi dire le lieu de rendez-vous d'Israël avec son Dieu.
