Spacieuse : à l'inverse de l'Egypte, qui n'est que la bande de terrain fertilisée par les inondations du Nil.

Découlant de lait et de miel. Ces deux produits sont particuliÚrement abondants en Palestine ; au reste, cette expression est proverbiale chez les auteurs anciens pour désigner un bon pays ; Dathan et Abiram l'appliquent à l'Egypte (Nombres 16.13).

Le Cananéen... La terre promise est désignée dans le Pentateuque par les noms de quelques-uns des peuples qui l'habitent, énumérés ici au nombre de six, ailleurs au nombre de dix (GenÚse 15.19-21), de sept (Deutéronome 7.4), de cinq (Exode 13.5) ou de deux (GenÚse 13.7). D'autres fois, ils sont représentés par le nom d'un seul qui doit avoir été le principal, les Cananéens (GenÚse 12.6).

      17 and the anger of Yahweh be kindled against you, and he shut up the sky, so that there shall be no rain, and the land shall not yield its fruit; and you perish quickly from off the good land which Yahweh gives you.
      18 Therefore you shall lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul; and you shall bind them for a sign on your hand, and they shall be for symbols between your eyes.
      19 You shall teach them your children, talking of them, when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.
      20 You shall write them on the door posts of your house, and on your gates;
      21 that your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in the land which Yahweh swore to your fathers to give them, as the days of the heavens above the earth.
      22 For if you shall diligently keep all this commandment which I command you, to do it, to love Yahweh your God, to walk in all his ways, and to cling to him;

      8 and found his heart faithful before you, and made a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite, and the Girgashite, to give it to his seed, and have performed your words; for you are righteous.
      22 Moreover you gave them kingdoms and peoples, which you allotted according to their portions. So they possessed the land of Sihon, even the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.
      23 You also multiplied their children as the stars of the sky, and brought them into the land concerning which you said to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it.
      24 "So the children went in and possessed the land, and you subdued before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gave them into their hands, with their kings, and the peoples of the land, that they might do with them as they pleased.
      25 They took fortified cities, and a rich land, and possessed houses full of all good things, cisterns dug out, vineyards, and olive groves, and fruit trees in abundance. So they ate, were filled, became fat, and delighted themselves in your great goodness.

      19 He brought me forth also into a large place. He delivered me, because he delighted in me.
