44 à 46 Les appartements des sacrificateurs (Figure 1, L et M).

En dehors du portique intérieur. Ces mots signifient que les nouvelles constructions dont il va être parlé, ne sont pas attenantes aux portiques, quoique situées dans la même zone. Le portique intérieur est ici toute la partie du portique qui s'avance dans le parvis intérieur, et le portique est spécialement le portique oriental dont il a été question versets 40 et 41.

Les chambres des chantres. C'est ici le seul passage de la vision où les chantres soient mentionnés. Institués par David et répartis par lui en vingt-quatre divisions (1Chroniques 24.1-31) avec trois directeurs (1Chroniques 6.31-32), les chantres formaient une des classes des Lévites. Au temps de David, leur nombre s'élevait à quatre mille. Ils se tenaient devant le tabernacle (1Chroniques 6.32), où ils avaient des chambres (1Chroniques 9.33). Ce sont celles dont il est question ici. Seulement, les Lévites étant destitués (44.10-14) et ne devant sans doute plus exercer désormais les fonctions honorifiques de chantres devant l'Eternel les chambres sont appelées ici chambres des chantres, non pas parce que les chantres lévites les occuperont à l'avenir, mais en souvenir de la place qu'ils y avaient jadis. Les anciennes chambres des chantres, bien connues sous ce nom dans le temple de Salomon, seront attribuées (verset 45) aux sacrificateurs.

Dans la partie du parvis, etc. Elles formaient un premier appartement (L), probablement à trois étages et muni de colonnes (voir 42.6), à côté du portique du nord. Il s'agit ici du côté est. C'est l'angle nord-est du parvis intérieur.

La façade au midi. Le premier appartement, comme le second (voir plus loin), regarde vers l'intérieur du parvis, et plus spécialement vers le portique principal, celui de l'est d'où (verset 40 et suivants) Ezéchiel peut bien observer cette disposition.

Un appartement (M). Ezéchiel remarque bientôt un autre appartement à côté du portique de l'orient. Comme cette seconde construction devait faire pendant à la première, on attendrait plutôt : à côté du portique du sud. Mais, située dans l'angle sud-est du parvis, elle est à égale distance des deux portiques sud et est, et peut être, avec une égale clarté, désignée comme étant à côté de l'un ou de l'autre. Le portique oriental est mentionné ici, parce qu'Ezéchiel s'y tenait à ce moment, ou parce que ce portique ayant une importance particulière au point de vue des sacrifices (verset 40 et suivants, il était naturellement en rapport avec l'appartement destiné aux sacrificateurs chargés du service de l'autel.
