World English Bible I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I that live, but Christ living in me. Comparer sur cette profonde union du chrétien avec son Sauveur Romains 6.3 et suivants, notes, et 2Corinthiens 5.14,15, notes.

La foi nous transplante si bien en Christ, que sa mort et sa vie deviennent notre mort et notre vie. Le crucifiement du Sauveur se reproduit dans son racheté par les renoncements douloureux et la mort graduelle du vieil homme, de ce moi que Paul nomme ici comme ne vivant plus.

Mais par l'union du racheté avec son Sauveur, Christ ressuscite en lui, créant en lui le nouvel homme ; le croyant s'approprie par la foi le Sauveur ressuscité et vivant, et s'identifie avec lui. Christ vit en moi, peut-il dire. Il vit bien encore maintenant d'une vie terrestre (dans la chair) ; mais s'il est obligé de continuer à vivre de cette vie, il ne vit plus que dans la foi au Fils de Dieu, cette foi qui est comme l'élément dans lequel il respire, la source et la condition de son existence nouvelle.

Et comment nommer ce Fils de Dieu sans rappeler l'immense amour par lequel il s'est donné lui-même pour nous faire part de sa vie ! Pour Paul, cet amour est devenu tout personnel : m'a aimé, s'est donné pour moi.

"Ces mots sont pleins d'une grande consolation et puissants pour réveiller la foi en nous. Celui qui peut répéter ce seul petit mot me, moi, avec la foi de saint Paul, celui-là, sans aucun doute, combattra avec énergie, comme saint Paul, la justification par les œuvres de la loi...Il faut bien enseigner touchant la foi, que par elle tu peux être tellement uni à Christ, que tu deviennes inséparablement un avec lui, en sorte que tu puisses dire : Je suis Christ, c'est-à-dire que sa justice, sa victoire, sa vie, tout ce qu'il a est aussi à moi. Et Christ à son tour peut dire : Je suis ce pauvre pécheur, tous ses péchés et sa mort sont devenus mes péchés et ma mort, dès qu'il s'est uni à moi par la foi et que je vis en lui." Luther.

L'apôtre décrit dans ce texte la vie spirituelle (ou cachée) d'un croyant. Le « vieil homme » est crucifié, Romains 6:6, alors que le « nouvel homme » est vivant ; le péché est mortifié et la Grâce est vivifiée.

Paul dispose du réconfort et de la puissance victorieuse de la Grâce ; cette Grâce n'émane pas de sa personne, mais d’une autre source : Christ !

Les croyants sont pleinement conscients de vivre dans un état de dépendance envers Christ. Ceci provient de ce que, bien qu’ils soient charnels, ils ne vivent pas cependant DE la chair. Ceux qui possèdent une véritable foi, vivent selon celle-ci, celle qui est attachée à Christ, Celui qui s'est donné Lui-même en rançon pour nous. Il m'a aimé, et s'est donné Lui-même pour moi. C'est un peu comme si l'apôtre s’exprimait ainsi : « Le Seigneur m'a vu m'éloigner de Lui de plus en plus. J’étais animé d’une telle méchanceté et d’une telle ignorance spirituelle, que j’étais convaincu qu'il était impossible que je puisse être sauvé, même par une rançon d’une très grande valeur ».

Considérons bien le prix d’un tel salut ! Remarquons au passage la piètre foi de beaucoup de personnes ; on peut en voir, par leur témoignage, les tristes conséquences : elles ont la forme de la piété sans en avoir la puissance... Elles estiment être dans la Vérité, spirituellement, alors qu’elles sont en fait complètement dans l’erreur.

Pour croire en Christ, il n'est pas suffisant de penser qu'Il a été crucifié, mais je dois croire également que je le suis AVEC Lui. C'est cela « connaître Christ crucifié ». De là, nous apprenons ce qu'est la nature de la Grâce. La Grâce de Dieu, ne peut dépendre du mérite de l'homme. Elle n’existe plus, en tant que telle, si Elle n'est pas donnée librement, dans tous les cas.

Plus le croyant compte en toute simplicité sur Christ, pour chaque détail de sa vie, plus il marche en Sa compagnie avec dévotion, dans toutes Ses ordonnances et selon Ses commandements. Christ vit et règne alors en son âme : le racheté vit ici-bas, par la foi dans le Fils de Dieu, Celui qui agit par amour, crée l'obéissance et opère les changements en son âme, selon sa sainte image. Ainsi, la Grâce de Dieu prend toute sa valeur, elle n'est pas rendue vaine !
