Bâton du commandement. Le mot hébreu mechokek désigne ordinairement le commandant lui-même, le législateur ; mais le parallélisme avec le mot sceptre oblige à le prendre ici dans le sens de bâton du commandement. Comparez pour ce sens Nombres 21.18

D'entre ses pieds. Il faut se représente le prince assis, tenant en sa main le sceptre, dont l'extrémité repose sur le sol entre ses pieds.

Jusqu'à ce que vienne Schilo. Jacob indique ici le terme auquel aboutira la souveraineté de Juda sur le peuple entier.

Le mot Schilo peut être pris soit comme régime, soit comme sujet du verbe venir : Jusqu'à ce qu'il (ou qu'on) vienne à Schilo, ou : Jusqu'à ce que Schilo vienne.

Dans la première construction, le mot Schilo a été interprété de différentes manières. Plusieurs l'on pris dans le sens géographique qu'a ce mot dans les autres passages où il se rencontre et où il désigne la ville de Silo aujourd'hui Seilûn (quelques ruines), dans la tribu d'Ephraïm. C'est là que le tabernacle fut placé après la conquête de Canaan, et là aussi que le partage du pays fut exécuté. On a supposé qu'en désignant ainsi cette ville, Jacob faisait allusion au sens de son nom qui signifierait repos. Juda serait à la tête du peuple jusqu'à son arrivée en Canaan, son lieu de repos. D'après ce sens, la souveraineté de Juda sur Israël consisterait dans le premier rang qui fut accordé à cette tribu dès la sortie d'Egypte pendant le séjour au désert.

Mais comment cette première place, dans les campements et dans les marches, pourrait-elle être appelée une souveraineté ? Et comment admettre que la promesse du rôle royal de Juda en Israël n'ait trait en aucune manière au grand fait de la royauté théocratique attachée pendant des siècles à la famille de David et à la tribu de Juda. De plus, Silo n'est mentionnée nulle part dans l'histoire patriarcale. L'on peut douter qu'elle existât déjà au temps de Jacob ou qu'elle fût connue de lui.

En admettant la même construction, on s'est borné au sens supposé du mot Schilo, repos, du verbe schala, être tranquille, en faisant abstraction de sa signification géographique. Mais cette explication se heurte à la même difficulté que la précédente ; la souveraineté proprement dite de Juda sur Israël n'a pas précédé, mais a suivi, et après un temps assez long, l'arrivée du peuple au repos, en Canaan.

D'après la seconde construction, Schilo est le sujet du verbe. Il peut avoir le sens abstrait, repos : Jusqu'à ce que le repos vienne ; c'est-à-dire qu'on soit arrivé en Canaan ; ou bien le sens concret, personnel, de pacificateur : Jusqu'à ce que vienne un pacificateur.

Il faut remarquer en effet que le mot Schilo est sans article : un pacificateur, et non pas : le pacificateur ; à moins qu'on ne veuille lui donner la valeur d'un nom propre, ce qui est peu naturel, puisque ce mot ne reparaît nulle part ailleurs. Le premier de ces deux sens rencontre les mêmes difficultés que les précédents. D'après le second, il s'agit évidemment, dans la pensée de Jacob, d'un personnage attendu par lui comme celui qui doit donner le repos à la terre. Le patriarche connaissait la promesse faite à Abraham : Toutes les nations de la terre seront bénies en ta postérité. Il pouvait donc attendre dans, un avenir lointain un personnage en qui s'accomplirait cette grande espérance. On comprendrait que l'attente messianique eût revêtu dans son esprit cette forme au moment où la division entre les peuples s'accentuait dans l'humanité et prenait un caractère de plus en plus marqué d'hostilité et de violence.

On a objecté que l'idée d'un Messie personnel n'a pu exister à une époque si reculée. Mais il n'est pas possible de décider cette question a priori, et la parole du père de Noé (5.29) montre certainement que l'espérance d'un pacificateur final a existé dès le commencement au sein de l'humanité croyante.

Plusieurs interprètes, n'étant satisfaits par aucun des sens indiqués, ont essayé de corriger le texte. Les anciens traducteurs grecs paraissent avoir lu schello, mot composé de la conjonction sché (pour ascher) : que, et du pronom lo : à lui. Cette correction admise, il faudrait traduire : Jusqu'à ce que vienne celui à qui..., en sous-entendant comme fin de phrase : appartient le sceptre, c'est-à-dire le Messie. L'ellipse serait forte et le sens n'est guère justifié par le passage analogue que l'on cite, Ezéchiel 21.32 : Jusqu'à ce que vienne celui à qui appartient le jugement. Car la pensée est ici complètement exprimée. La correction proposée suppose d'ailleurs une forme grammaticale sans exemple dans le Pentateuque.

Et c'est à lui qu'appartient l'obéissance des peuples. Si l'on entendait la proposition précédente dans ce sens : Jusqu'à ce qu'on vienne à Silo, ou au repos, l'expression : C'est à lui, ne pourrait se rapporter qu'à Juda. Mais si l'on donne à Schilo un sens personnel et qu'on en fasse le sujet de vienne, le pronom lui doit naturellement se rapporter à ce sujet nouveau, au Messie.

Les principaux interprètes modernes s'accordent à reconnaître que le terme ammim, les peuples, ne peut désigner ici les tribus israélites (dans ce sens, ces mots n'ajouteraient rien à ce qui précède) mais seulement les peuples païens, les familles de la terre dont Dieu avait parlé à Abraham. Juda doit, régner en Israël jusqu'à ce qu'il obtienne ou que vienne celui qui obtiendra l'obéissance de tous les peuples de la terre.

Même si l'on admet le sens messianique du mot Schilo, ce passage n'annonce point expressément que le Messie sortira de Juda. Mais c'est pourtant, d'après le contexte la supposition la plus naturelle, puisqu'autrement la promesse du Messie, point culminant dans la bénédiction de Juda, se changerait en une menace pour cette tribu, qui serait, dès cette venue, privée de sa souveraineté. Le sens dans cette application au Messie est donc probablement celui-ci : Juda ne perdra point sa souveraineté sur Israël jusqu'à ce que, par la venue du Messie, elle se trouve transformée dans sa personne en souveraineté sur tous les peuples. Mais la promesse ainsi comprise s'est-elle réalisée ? Il semble que la souveraineté de Juda ait subi de nombreuses interruptions avant la venue du Sauveur. Mais la prépondérance de Juda en Israël n'en a pas moins été un fait constant, le trait saillant dans l'histoire du peuple. Il y conserve le rang prééminent qu'il a occupé déjà dans la famille patriarcale (37.26 ; 43.8 et suivants ; 44.14 et suivants ; 46.28).

Dans les dénombrements, cette tribu est trouvée la plus nombreuse (Nombres 1.27 ; 26.22) ; au camp et dans les marches, elle occupe la première place (Nombres 2.3 ; 10.14) ; à l'époque des Juges, elle a l'initiative des guerres auxquelles toutes les tribus prennent part (Juges 1.17-20 ; 20.18) ; avec David, enfin, elle devient la tribu royale, et après le retour de la captivité, le peuple s'absorbe pour ainsi dire en elle et tout entier prend son nom (Juifs = hommes de Juda).
