Dieu accompagnait les premiers témoins de l'Evangile ; il ajoutait son témoignage au leur et le confirmait par des signes et des prodiges.

Les deux termes signes et prodiges s'appliquent aux mêmes faits ; le premier indique leur haute signification, le second leur caractère extraordinaire, surnaturel. Jésus présentait de même ses œuvres comme des signes, des preuves de sa mission divine. (Jean 5.36 ; 10.25,37,38 ; 14.10,11 ; 15.24)

Le troisième terme et divers miracles ne mentionne pas une nouvelle catégorie de faits, mais désigne les signes et les prodiges au point de vue de leur origine ; ils sont des miracles, c'est-à-dire, suivant l'étymologie, des puissances, des manifestations de la puissance divine.

- Les trois termes : signes, prodiges, miracles sont associés de même Actes 2.22 ; 2Corinthiens 12.12.

- Tous ces actes miraculeux s'accomplissaient en vertu de communications ou distributions que Dieu faisait de l'Esprit Saint, (1Corinthiens 12) selon sa volonté. La volonté divine reste le régulateur de ces communications et de l'activité qu'elles produisent. C'est la condition pour que celle-ci soit un témoignage rendu par Dieu.
