Le terme de paresseux ne désigne pas, comme Hébreux 5.11, la lenteur à comprendre la doctrine chrétienne, mais le manque de fermeté dans l'espérance.

Quoique l'auteur eût ici en vue l'exemple des hommes de Dieu de l'ancienne Alliance, d'Abraham qu'il va rappeler, (Hébreux 6.13) et de tous ceux qu'il citera à Hébreux 11, il parle au présent (ceux qui héritent), afin d'étendre sa pensée aux croyants de tous les temps ; car tous ont les mêmes promesses de salut qui furent faites à Abraham, et ils ne peuvent, comme lui, en hériter, en obtenir l'accomplissement que par la patience et par la foi. (Galates 3.14)
