World English Bible I have told you these things, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have oppression; but cheer up! I have overcome the world."

Malgré le douloureux avertissement qu'il a dû leur donner, (verset 32) les dernières paroles de Jésus à ses disciples sont des paroles de paix, de courage, de victoire !

Tout ce qu'il leur a dit jusqu'ici (ces choses), tous ces derniers discours des chapitres 14 à 16 n'avaient d'autre but que celui-ci : qu'en moi vous ayez la paix.

La paix, la paix du cœur, ce bien suprême avec lequel aucun homme ne peut être malheureux, la paix, toujours puisée en moi, dans une communion intime et vivante avec moi, tel est l'héritage que je vous laisse. (Jean 14.27)

Il y a, il est vrai, un redoutable adversaire de cette paix : le monde, ce monde ennemi de Dieu et de sa vérité, ce monde au milieu duquel je vous laisse, là vous avez de l'affliction. Verbe au présent, selon Sin., B, A, C, majuscules, parce que le cœur sympathique de Jésus voit déjà ses chers disciples au milieu des souffrances qui allaient fondre sur eux.

Mais prenez courage, moi j'ai vaincu le monde. Il y a un accent de triomphe dans ce mot, moi, que Jésus oppose à la faiblesse des disciples, et dans ce verbe au parfait, j'ai vaincu.

Jésus voit sa victoire sur le monde déjà accomplie par sa mort, par sa résurrection, par sa gloire. (Comparer Jean 12.31 ; 13.31) C'est là que les disciples puiseront toujours le courage que ces paroles devaient leur inspirer. (Romains 8.37 ; 2Corinthiens 4.7-11,16-18, et ailleurs.)
