Les versets versets 6-8, que plusieurs exégètes considèrent comme appartenant encore à la prière de Jésus pour lui-même et pour son œuvre, (verset 1, note) sont plutôt la transition à sa prière pour les apôtres.

Le Sauveur y exprime à leur sujet une appréciation rassurante : ils sont, par l'effet de l'enseignement qu'il leur a donné et de l'action qu'il a exercée sur eux, bien préparés à recevoir les grâces qu'il va demander en leur faveur.

D'abord, il leur a manifesté le nom de Dieu. Ils le connaissaient sans doute, ce nom, puisqu'ils étaient de pieux Israélites ; mais comme dans le style de l'écriture le nom de Dieu représente tout l'ensemble des perfections divines, (Matthieu 6.9, 3e note) Jésus veut dire qu'il leur a révélé Dieu, sa miséricorde, sa sainteté, son amour, d'une manière beaucoup plus complète et intime.

Ce qui lui a permis de leur accorder une telle révélation, c'est, en second lieu, que Dieu, à qui ils appartenaient par l'œuvre de sa grâce et par les dispositions de leur cœur, les a tirés du monde (Jean 15.19) et donnés au Sauveur. (Voir, sur le sens de ces paroles, Jean 6.37,44,45, notes.)

Enfin cette double œuvre de Dieu et du Sauveur a eu, dans les disciples, ce beau résultat : Ils ont gardé ta parole dans leur cœur et leur vie. Jésus dit : ta parole, parce qu'il regarde ses enseignements comme étant ceux de Dieu même (Jean 17.8 ; 7.16 ; 12.49)

Christ prie pour ceux qui Lui appartiennent. Il s’adresse au Père : « Tu me les a donnés », comme l’on confie des brebis au berger, pour que Celui-ci les gardent, ou un malade au médecin, pour que ce dernier les guérisse, ou des enfants à un professeur, pour qu’il les instruisent. C'est dans cette optique que Jésus accomplit Son ministère.

Dans la confiance que nous plaçons en Christ, il est vraiment réconfortant de savoir que tout ce qu'Il représente, tout ce qu’Il possède, tout ce qu’Il accomplit et tout ce qu’Il annonce, tout vient de Dieu.

Christ a adressé cette prière à Son Père pour les Siens, pour les croyants, pas pour le monde au sens général. Celui qui désire s’approcher spirituellement du Père, étant parfaitement conscient de son indignité, ne doit pas être découragé par cette déclaration du Sauveur : Il est à la fois capable et tout à fait disposé à sauver parfaitement tous ceux qui viennent à Dieu, par l’intermédiaire de Jésus.

Les convictions les plus profondes et les désirs de sainteté sont les signes les plus prometteurs de l’œuvre que Christ opère dans le cœur d’un homme ; ces révélations spirituelles mettent en évidence qu'Il a été choisi pour le salut des hommes, au travers de la sanctification de l'Esprit et de la foi en la Vérité.

« Ils sont à toi » ; (Jean 17:9*) « ne pourvoiras-tu pas aux besoins des tiens ? Ne les rendras-tu pas fermes quant à leur piété » ? Observez le fondement sur lequel cette plaidoirie est basée : tout ce qui est à moi est à toi, ce qui est à toi est à moi. Ces termes mentionnent le Père et le Fils, les deux n’étant qu’un. Le Fils ne possède rien qui ne soit consacré au service du Père.
