10.6 à 12.7 Jephthé.

La nouvelle phase de la période des Juges qui s'ouvre ici et qui va de la mort de Jaïr à l'apparition de Samuel comme prophète, fut un temps de profond abaissement : Israël fut opprimé de deux côtés à la fois par deux peuples ennemis, à l'est du Jourdain par les Ammonites, à l'ouest par les Philistins, voir l'Introduction.

6 à 18 Nouvelle apostasie d'Israël et nouveau châtiment. Ce morceau forme l'introduction non seulement de l'histoire de Jephthé et des Juges qui lui succédèrent, mais aussi de celle de Samson. Cette introduction est générale dans les versets 6 à 16 et particulière à Jephthé dans les versets 17 et 18.

L'infidélité d'Israël dépasse alors en étendue et en grossièreté tout ce qu'on avait vu précédemment, tellement que la Palestine devient comme le panthéon des dieux de tous les pays voisins.

Maintenant que les menaces divines à l'égard du peuple d'Israël étaient accomplies, ce dernier n'avait plus de force pour faire face à ses ennemis, Juges 6:17,37. C'est en suivant de mauvaises voies et en pratiquant le mal, que les Hébreux se trouvèrent finalement dans cette triste situation.
