L'autruche : connue pour sa voracité, qui lui fait avaler même des pierres et des morceaux de métal ; c'est un animal hybride, à la fois marchant et volant.

Le chat-huant, ou le hibou, selon les anciennes versions. Cependant l'étymologie du mot, qui signifie : le violent, ne fait guères songer à cet oiseau. On a pensé à l'autruche mâle, que les Arabes appellent l'inique, mais pourquoi cette distinction des sexes, qui serait unique ? ou au coucou, à cause de la violence avec laquelle il s'empare de nids étrangers, mais il est bien petit ; ou enfin à l'hirondelle, mais elle porte un autre nom. Reconnaissons notre ignorance sur ce point.

La mouette : elle abonde sur les côtes de Syrie et se nourrit, à l'occasion, de corps morts.

Toute espèce d'éperviers. Les éperviers abondent dans toute l'Asie antérieure ; ils sont très belliqueux, attaquant même leurs semblables et leurs propres petits.
