Silence éloquent. L'imparfait : il gardait le silence, indique que Jésus persistait dans cette attitude malgré les efforts du souverain sacrificateur, l'aoriste : il ne répondit rien consigne le résultat final. (Comparer Matthieu 26.63 et 27 : 14, notes.)

Grec : Toi es-tu le Messie, le Fils du Béni ?

Ce dernier mot est un hébraïsme par lequel les Juifs désignaient avec dévotion le Dieu digne de toute adoration. Par ce langage hypocrite et par cette question à la fois solennelle et méprisante (toi), Caïphe préparait son auditoire à trouver un blasphème dans la réponse de Jésus, si cette réponse était affirmative.
