I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand to heaven, and swore by him who lives forever that it shall be for a time, times, and a half; and when they have made an end of breaking in pieces the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.

I heard, but I didn't understand: then I said, my lord, what shall be the issue of these things?

The disciples came, and said to him, "Why do you speak to them in parables?"

He answered them, "To you it is given to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven, but it is not given to them.

Then Jesus sent the multitudes away, and went into the house. His disciples came to him, saying, "Explain to us the parable of the darnel weeds of the field."

The enemy who sowed them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels.

As he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately,

"Tell us, when will these things be? What is the sign that these things are all about to be fulfilled?"

They asked him, "Teacher, so when will these things be? What is the sign that these things are about to happen?"

Peter seeing him, said to Jesus, "Lord, what about this man?"

Jesus said to him, "If I desire that he stay until I come, what is that to you? You follow me."

He said to them, "It isn't for you to know times or seasons which the Father has set within his own authority.

But concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need that anything be written to you.

For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night.

For when they are saying, "Peace and safety," then sudden destruction will come on them, like birth pains on a pregnant woman; and they will in no way escape.

But you, brothers, aren't in darkness, that the day should overtake you like a thief.

You are all children of light, and children of the day. We don't belong to the night, nor to darkness,

so then let's not sleep, as the rest do, but let's watch and be sober.

For those who sleep, sleep in the night, and those who are drunk are drunk in the night.

But let us, since we belong to the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and, for a helmet, the hope of salvation.

For God didn't appoint us to wrath, but to the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,

who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

Therefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as you also do.

or else he must have suffered often since the foundation of the world. But now once at the end of the ages, he has been revealed to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
Les disciples ont différé leur question pour pouvoir interroger leur Maître en particulier, car ils sentaient qu'il s'agissait d'une révélation solennelle qu'eux seuls alors devaient entendre. Ils adressent à Jésus deux questions :
1° Quand est-ce que ces choses (la destruction de Jérusalem, v.2) arriveront ?
2° Quel sera le signe de ton avènement et de la consommation du temps ?
L'avènement de Jésus-Christ, ou son arrivée, ou sa présence (grec parousia), c'est son retour dans la gloire pour juger le monde et pour élever son règne à la perfection, (comparez Matthieu 24.27,37,39 ; 1Thessaloniciens 2.19 ; 4.15 ; 2Thessaloniciens 2.1 ; 1Corinthiens 15.23 ; 1Jean 2.28 ; Jacques 5.7)
c'est ce qui est appelé ailleurs son apparition (1Timothée 6.14,2Timothée 4.1)
ou encore sa révélation. (1Corinthiens 1.7 ; 2Thessaloniciens 1.7 ; 1Pierre 1.7)
A l'avénement de Christ les disciples joignent la consommation du temps (grec du siècle) expression propre à Matthieu (Matthieu 13.39,40,49) et qu'on traduit ordinairement par ces mots : la fin du monde, c'est-à-dire la fin de l'économie présente.
Ainsi, dans la pensée des disciples, qui est celle de tout le Nouveau Testament, le retour de Christ la résurrection et le jugement coïncident avec la consommation du temps, ou ce qui est appelé ailleurs "le dernier jour," (Jean 6.39,40,44,54) ou "les derniers jours," (Actes 2.17 ; 2Timothée 3.1) ou encore "le dernier temps," (1Pierre 1.5,20) ou enfin "la dernière heure." (1Jean 2.18)
