Les pharisiens et les sadducéens formaient deux écoles philosophiques et religieuses et aussi deux partis politiques dans la nation juive.

- Le nom de pharisien signifie les "séparés," non qu'ils constituassent une secte dans la théocratie, mais, pour autant que ce terme indique leur caractère, il se rapporte plutôt à leur orgueilleuse aversion pour les païens, pour les Samaritains, pour les péagers et les pécheurs. Ils se distinguaient par leur zèle servile pour les plus minutieuses prescriptions de la loi, auxquelles ils ajoutaient celles de la tradition. Ils étaient aussi l'expression vivante de l'orthodoxie judaïque, ce qui, joint à leur pouvoir dans le sanhédrin, où ils étaient en majorité, leur donnait une grande influence sur le peuple. Quant aux doctrines de ce parti et à son importance politique et religieuse, on peut apprendre à les connaître par l'historien Josèphe qui y revient souvent et longuement. (Par exemple, Antiq., XIII, 5. 9, etc.) Le rôle que jouent les pharisiens dans la vie du Sauveur, surtout dans l'histoire de ses souffrances et de sa mort, les caractérise mieux encore.

- Les sadducéens, dont le nom dérive, selon les uns, du mot tsadik, juste selon les autres, d'un chef d'école nommé Tsadoc, formaient le parti opposé aux pharisiens. Rejetant toute tradition et même les développements de la révélation divine depuis la loi, les sadducéens niaient en même temps les réalités du monde invisible, l'existence des anges, l'immortalité de l'âme. A cause de cela, et en raison de leur petit nombre, ils exerçaient peu d'influence sur le peuple, mais d'autant plus sur les classes élevées et riches, où, pour plusieurs, certaines négations ont toujours un air de supériorité et de bon ton.

-Il y avait encore parmi les Juifs, au temps du Sauveur, un troisième parti religieux, les esséniens, dont le Nouveau Testament ne parle pas, parce qu'ils vivaient très retirés, le principal caractère de leur piété étant un rigoureux ascétisme. Ils représentaient le mysticisme monacal comme les pharisiens la propre justice orthodoxe comme les sadducéens le rationalisme de toutes les nuances. La vraie vie religieuse était alors retirée dans quelques âmes qui "attendaient la consolation d'Israël.," Luc 2.25

On se demande comment et pourquoi plusieurs membres de ces deux partis venaient au baptême de Jean, et, s'ils y venaient, pourquoi Jean leur adresse des paroles si sévères. On a même vu une contradiction à cet égard entre Matthieu et Luc, qui, dans son récit du ministère du Baptiste (ch. 3), ne parle pas d'eux, et qui, ailleurs, (Luc 7.30) dit positivement qu'ils ne l'avaient pas reçu. La réponse à ces questions ne parait pas difficile. Que des hommes avides de popularité vinssent au prophète autour duquel se pressait la foule les uns pour ne pas paraître indifférents ou impies, les autres par simple curiosité, rien de plus naturel. Mais le prophète pénétrait leurs indignes mobiles de là les paroles sévères qu'il leur adresse. En les accueillant de la sorte, il les blessa dans leur orgueil ; ils se retirèrent, sinon tous, du moins pour la plupart, sans s'être soumis au baptême. Cela n'est pas dit expressément, mais cela résulte du discours du prophète. Il y a plus : Luc, sans parler des pharisiens et des sadducéens, rapporte les terribles paroles de Jean, qui ne pouvaient s'adresser qu'à eux, et non aux pécheurs repentants ; il suppose donc leur présence. Enfin cette position équivoque, prise par les hommes de ces deux partis à l'égard de Jean-Baptiste, s'accorde tout à fait avec l'embarras dans lequel une question du Sauveur les mettra plus tard. Jean se défie de leur zèle apparent. Il démêle la ruse qui leur fait rechercher dans l'accomplissement d'une cérémonie extérieure une garantie contre le jugement à venir. "Dans cet essai d'éluder le devoir de la repentance au moyen du signe de la repentance Jean reconnaît la suggestion d'un conseiller plus habile que le cœur de l'homme ; de là la question suivante : Qui vous a montré ?" Le rôle de la prédication est de mettre en application la doctrine divine : tel était le but de l’exhortation de Jean.

Les Pharisiens se souciaient d’abord d’observer et de respecter le côté apparent de la piété, en négligeant les points les plus importants de la loi morale, et la signification spirituelle de leurs cérémonies légales. Certains d'entre eux étaient de détestables hypocrites, faisant de leurs prétentions à la sainteté, une parure inique.

Les sadducéens avaient une démarche tout à fait opposée, niant l'existence des esprits et d’une vie spirituelle future. Ils étaient à cette époque et dans ce pays, des « infidèles » méprisables.

Il y a inéluctablement une colère divine à venir. Chacun devrait chercher à la fuir. Dieu, qui ne prend aucun plaisir à notre ruine, nous a avertis à ce sujet ; Il nous prévient par Sa Parole, par Ses serviteurs, ainsi que par le biais de notre conscience. Ceux qui se disent désolés par le constat de leurs péchés, et qui cependant, persistent dans leurs voies, ne sont pas dignes d’être appelés des repentants, et n’ont de ce fait aucun privilège spirituel. Le véritable repentant est humble et abaissé à ses propres yeux, reconnaissant pour la moindre miséricorde qui lui est accordée, patient lors des afflictions sévères, vigilant contre toute apparence de péché, appliqué dans son devoir, et charitable quant aux jugements de son prochain.

Ce texte énonce une parole de prudence : ne pas se baser aveuglément sur des privilèges extérieurs acquis. Nous courons un grand danger quand nos cœurs tentent d’étouffer toute conviction de péché, en mettant de côté la Puissance révélatrice de la Parole de Dieu. On trouve de nombreuses personnes, qui, en se fiant abusivement sur les honneurs et les avantages que peuvent avoir les membres d'une église, sont en fait bien loin du ciel...

Ce texte contient une terrible menace à l’encontre de l'insouciant et de celui qui se croit faussement en sécurité. Nos cœurs corrompus ne peuvent, par nature, produire du bon fruit, à moins que l'Esprit régénérateur de Christ ne greffe en eux la perfection de la Parole de Dieu. Tout arbre, même le plus haut, le plus majestueux ou le plus verdoyant, qui ne produit pas de bon fruit, à savoir celui de la repentance, sera abattu et jeté dans le feu de la colère divine, l’endroit le plus propice pour recevoir les « plantes stériles » : à quoi d'autre pourrait-il servir ? S'il ne fournit aucun fruit, il sera un parfait combustible !

Jean annonce la venue de Christ, le rôle et les desseins de ce Dernier : cet avènement était imminent.

Notre comportement et notre apparence extérieure, ne peuvent aucunement nous rendre purs. Nulle ordonnance, quel qu’en soit l’auteur ou le mode, ne peut suppléer au besoin du baptême du Saint-Esprit et de feu. Seul le pouvoir purificateur du Saint-Esprit peut produire cette pureté de cœur et ces « saintes affections » qui accompagnent le salut ! C'est Christ qui baptise de l’Esprit Saint. C'est ce qu'Il a fait ne manière extraordinaire envers les apôtres, Actes 2:4. C'est ce qu'Il fait aussi dans les grâces et les réconforts octroyés par l'Esprit, à ceux qui le Lui demandent, Luc 11:13, Jean 7:38,39, Actes 11:16.

Observons ici que l'église des « Gentils » est « l'aire de battage » de Christ, Esa 21:10. Les véritables croyants sont comme le blé : substantiel, utile, et précieux ; les hypocrites sont comme une balle de paille : légers et vides, inutiles et sans valeur, emportés au loin par le moindre souffle ; le monde est constitué de « bons » et de « mauvais », tous dans le même cheminement ; un jour viendra, malgré tout, où le blé et la paille seront séparés...

Le dernier jugement sera un jour remarquable : les saints et les pécheurs seront séparés pour toujours. Dans le ciel, les saints seront rassemblés, ils ne seront plus jamais disséminés ; ils seront en sécurité, loin de tout danger, séparés de leurs voisins corrompus et esclaves de leurs vaines convoitises.

L'enfer est un feu inextinguible ; il sera certainement la « part » et la punition des hypocrites et des impies.

La vie et la mort, le bien et le mal, sont placés devant nous : selon notre conduite ici-bas, « dans le champ », nous serons alors étendus sur « l'aire de battage ».
