Pour marcher sûrement dans le chemin de la vérité (vers. 13, 14), il faut se garder des séductions de l'erreur.

- Qui étaient, dans la pensée de Jésus, les faux prophètes ? C'étaient, en première ligne, les docteurs de la loi, les pharisiens, les chefs des prêtres, qui, semblables à leurs devanciers, (Jérémie 28) entraînaient le peuple à sa ruine. (Comparer Luc 6.26) Mais le Seigneur voyait plus loin encore que le moment présent ; il savait que dans son Eglise aussi se lèveraient de faux docteurs prétendant parler au nom de Dieu. Les versets de Matthieu 7 ; 21-23, et surtout Matthieu 24.11,24 montrent avec évidence que Jésus pensait à ce péril futur.

- En vêtements de brebis, avec l'apparence de la douceur, de l'innocence, de la vérité, mais au dedans, considérés du dedans (grec), selon leur vraie nature, ils sont des loups ravissants ou rapaces, qui enlèvent et dévorent les brebis.

Rien n'empêche davantage les hommes d'entrer par la porte étroite, et de devenir ainsi, de vrais disciples de Christ, que les doctrines charnelles, flatteuses, d’où émane une certaine paix, doctrines enseignées par ceux qui s'opposent à la vérité.

Ces faux enseignements se décèlent par leurs dérives et leurs mauvaises conséquences. Une bonne partie de leur contenu et de la conduite qu’ils divulguent est contraire à ce qu’enseigne l'Esprit de Christ. Si ces « dérives » conduisent au péché, elles ne viennent pas de Dieu !
