Par maison patriarcale. Ce terme désigne ici la tribu. Il est peut-être employé par la raison que le mot matté, qui désigne ordinairement la tribu, est employé pour désigner les verges.

Douze verges. La verge n'est point ici l'insigne du commandement, puisqu'il s'agit de la sacrificature. La sève divine vivifiant l'une de ces branches détachées du tronc sera le signe de l'élection de Dieu. Comme il est peu probable que les deux tribus d'Ephraïm et de Manassé aient été réunies dans ce cas en une seule (celle de Joseph, Deutéronome 27.11-12), la verge d'Aaron fut sans doute la treizième.
