    • 2 Samuel 11

      1 L'année suivante, à l’époque où les rois partent en campagne, David envoya Joab, avec ses serviteurs et tout Israël, semer la dévastation chez les Ammonites et faire le siège de Rabba. Quant à lui, il resta à Jérusalem.
      2 Un soir, David se leva de son lit. Comme il se promenait sur le toit du palais royal, il aperçut de là une femme qui se baignait et qui était très belle.
      3 David fit demander qui était cette femme et on lui dit : « N'est-ce pas Bath-Shéba, fille d'Eliam et femme d'Urie le Hittite ? »
      4 David envoya alors des messagers la chercher. Elle vint vers lui et il coucha avec elle, alors qu’elle venait de se purifier après ses règles. Puis elle retourna chez elle.
      5 Cette femme tomba enceinte et elle fit dire à David : « Je suis enceinte. »
      6 Alors David fit dire à Joab : « Envoie-moi Urie le Hittite. » Et Joab envoya Urie à David.
      7 Urie se rendit vers David, qui l'interrogea sur l'état de Joab, du peuple et de la guerre.
      8 Puis David dit à Urie : « Descends chez toi et prends un moment de détente. » Urie sortit du palais royal, suivi d'un cadeau du roi.
      9 Mais il se coucha à la porte du palais royal, avec tous les serviteurs de son maître, et il ne descendit pas chez lui.
      10 On en informa David en lui disant : « Urie n'est pas descendu chez lui. » David dit à Urie : « N'arrives-tu pas de voyage ? Pourquoi n'es-tu pas descendu chez toi ? »
      11 Urie lui répondit : « L'arche de l’alliance ainsi qu’Israël et Juda habitent sous des tentes, mon seigneur Joab et les serviteurs de mon seigneur campent en rase campagne et moi, je rentrerais chez moi pour manger et boire et pour coucher avec ma femme ! Aussi vrai que tu es vivant et que ton âme est vivante, je ne ferai pas cela. »
      12 David dit à Urie : « Reste ici aujourd'hui encore et demain je te laisserai repartir. » Urie resta à Jérusalem ce jour-là et le lendemain.
      13 David l'invita à manger et à boire en sa présence et il l'enivra. Le soir, Urie sortit pour s’étendre sur son lit avec les serviteurs de son maître, mais il ne descendit pas chez lui.
      14 Le lendemain matin, David écrivit une lettre à Joab et il la lui fit parvenir par l’intermédiaire d'Urie.
      15 Il écrivit dans cette lettre : « Placez Urie au plus fort du combat, puis reculez derrière lui afin qu'il soit frappé et meure. »
      16 Au cours du siège de la ville, Joab plaça Urie à un endroit qu'il savait défendu par de vaillants soldats.
      17 Les habitants de la ville firent une sortie et livrèrent combat contre Joab. Plusieurs tombèrent parmi le peuple, parmi les serviteurs de David. Urie le Hittite fut lui aussi tué.
      18 Joab envoya un messager pour rapporter à David tout ce qui s'était passé dans le combat.
      19 Il donna cet ordre au messager : « Quand tu auras fini de raconter au roi tous les détails du combat,
      20 peut-être se mettra-t-il en colère et te dira-t-il : ‘Pourquoi vous êtes-vous approchés de la ville pour combattre ? Ne savez-vous pas qu'on peut lancer des projectiles du haut de la muraille ?
      21 Qui a tué Abimélec, le fils de Jerubbésheth ? C’est une femme qui a lancé sur lui, du haut de la muraille, un morceau de meule de moulin et il en est mort à Thébets ! Pourquoi vous êtes-vous approchés de la muraille ?’Alors tu diras : ‘Ton serviteur Urie le Hittite est mort aussi.’ »
      22 Le messager partit et, à son arrivée, il rapporta à David tout ce que Joab lui avait ordonné de dire.
      23 Il dit à David : « Ces gens ont pris l'avantage sur nous. Ils avaient fait une sortie contre nous dans la campagne et nous les avons repoussés jusqu'à la porte de la ville.
      24 Les archers ont tiré sur tes serviteurs du haut de la muraille et plusieurs des serviteurs du roi ont été tués. Ton serviteur Urie le Hittite est mort aussi. »
      25 David dit au messager : « Voici ce que tu diras à Joab : ‘Ne sois pas peiné de cette affaire, car l'épée dévore tantôt l'un, tantôt l'autre. Renforce ton combat contre cette ville et détruis-la.’Quant à toi, encourage-le ! »
      26 La femme d'Urie apprit que son mari était mort et elle le pleura.
      27 Quand sa période de deuil fut passée, David l'envoya chercher et l’accueillit chez lui. Elle devint sa femme et lui donna un fils. Ce que David avait fait déplut à l'Eternel.

      2 Samuel 12

      1 L'Eternel envoya Nathan vers David. Il vint donc le trouver et lui dit : « Il y avait dans une ville deux hommes, l'un riche et l'autre pauvre.
      2 Le riche avait des brebis et des bœufs en très grand nombre.
      3 Le pauvre n'avait rien du tout, sauf une petite brebis, qu'il avait achetée. Il la nourrissait et elle grandissait chez lui avec ses enfants. Elle mangeait de son pain, buvait dans sa coupe et dormait contre lui. Il la considérait comme sa fille.
      4 Un voyageur est arrivé chez l'homme riche, mais le riche n'a pas voulu toucher à ses brebis ou à ses bœufs pour préparer un repas au voyageur venu chez lui : il a pris la brebis du pauvre et l'a préparée pour l'homme qui était venu chez lui. »
      5 La colère de David s'enflamma violemment contre cet homme et il dit à Nathan : « L'Eternel est vivant ! L'homme qui a fait cela mérite la mort.
      6 En outre il remplacera la brebis par 4 autres, puisqu’il a commis cet acte et s’est montré sans pitié. »
      7 Nathan déclara alors à David : « C’est toi qui es cet homme-là ! Voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël : Je t'ai désigné par onction comme roi sur Israël et je t'ai délivré de Saül.
      8 Je t'ai donné la famille de ton maître, j'ai mis ses femmes contre ta poitrine et je t'ai donné la communauté d'Israël et de Juda. Si cela avait été trop peu, j'y aurais encore ajouté.
      9 Pourquoi donc as-tu méprisé la parole de l'Eternel en faisant ce qui est mal à mes yeux ? Tu as tué par l'épée Urie le Hittite, tu as pris sa femme pour faire d’elle ta femme et lui, tu l'as tué sous les coups d'épée des Ammonites.
      10 Désormais, puisque tu m'as méprisé et que tu as pris la femme d'Urie le Hittite pour faire d’elle ta femme, l'épée ne s'éloignera plus de ton foyer.
      11 Voici ce que dit l'Eternel : Je vais faire sortir de ta propre famille le malheur contre toi et je vais prendre sous tes yeux tes propres femmes pour les donner à un autre, qui couchera au grand jour avec elles.
      12 En effet, tu as agi en secret, mais moi, c’est en présence de tout Israël et en plein jour que je ferai cela. »
      13 David dit à Nathan : « J'ai péché contre l'Eternel ! » Nathan lui répondit : « L'Eternel pardonne ton péché, tu ne mourras pas.
      14 Cependant, parce que tu as fait blasphémer les ennemis de l'Eternel en commettant cet acte, le fils qui t'est né mourra. »
      15 Nathan retourna chez lui. L'Eternel frappa l'enfant que la femme d'Urie avait donné à David, et il fut gravement malade.
      16 David pria Dieu pour l'enfant et jeûna. Lorsqu’il rentra, il passa la nuit couché par terre.
      17 Les responsables du palais insistèrent auprès de lui pour qu’il se relève, mais il refusa et il ne mangea rien avec eux.
      18 Le septième jour, l'enfant mourut. Les serviteurs de David avaient peur de lui annoncer que l'enfant était mort, car ils se disaient : « Lorsque l'enfant était encore vivant, nous lui avons parlé et il ne nous a pas écoutés. Comment oserons-nous lui dire que l'enfant est mort ? Il réagira mal. »
      19 David s’aperçut que ses serviteurs parlaient tout bas entre eux et comprit que l'enfant était mort. Il leur demanda : « L'enfant est-il mort ? » Ils répondirent : « Il est mort. »
      20 Alors David se releva. Il se lava, se parfuma et changea d’habits. Puis il se rendit dans la maison de l'Eternel et s’y prosterna. De retour chez lui, il demanda qu'on lui serve à manger et il mangea.
      21 Ses serviteurs lui dirent : « Que signifie ta façon d’agir ? Tant que l'enfant était vivant, tu jeûnais et tu pleurais. Maintenant qu’il est mort, tu te relèves et tu manges ! »
      22 Il répondit : « Lorsque l'enfant était encore vivant, je jeûnais et je pleurais, car je me disais : ‘Qui sait ? Peut-être l'Eternel me fera-t-il grâce et peut-être l'enfant restera-t-il en vie.’
      23 Maintenant qu'il est mort, pourquoi jeûner ? Puis-je le faire revenir ? C’est moi qui irai le retrouver, mais lui ne reviendra pas vers moi. »
      24 David consola sa femme Bath-Shéba, et il alla vers elle et coucha avec elle. Elle mit au monde un fils qu'elle appela Salomon et que l'Eternel aima.
      25 Il le confia au prophète Nathan et celui-ci l’appela Jedidja à cause de l'Eternel.

    • 2 Samuel 11

      1 It happened, at the return of the year, at the time when kings go out, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed at Jerusalem.
      2 It happened at evening, that David arose from off his bed, and walked on the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful to look on.
      3 David sent and inquired after the woman. One said, "Isn't this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?"
      4 David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in to him, and he lay with her (for she was purified from her uncleanness); and she returned to her house.
      5 The woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, "I am with child."
      6 David sent to Joab, "Send me Uriah the Hittite." Joab sent Uriah to David.
      7 When Uriah had come to him, David asked of him how Joab did, and how the people fared, and how the war prospered.
      8 David said to Uriah, "Go down to your house, and wash your feet." Uriah departed out of the king's house, and a gift from the king was sent after him.
      9 But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and didn't go down to his house.
      10 When they had told David, saying, "Uriah didn't go down to his house," David said to Uriah, "Haven't you come from a journey? Why didn't you go down to your house?"
      11 Uriah said to David, "The ark, Israel, and Judah, are staying in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open field. Shall I then go into my house to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing!"
      12 David said to Uriah, "Stay here today also, and tomorrow I will let you depart." So Uriah stayed in Jerusalem that day, and the next day.
      13 When David had called him, he ate and drink before him; and he made him drunk. At evening, he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but didn't go down to his house.
      14 It happened in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.
      15 He wrote in the letter, saying, "Send Uriah to the forefront of the hottest battle, and retreat from him, that he may be struck, and die."
      16 It happened, when Joab kept watch on the city, that he assigned Uriah to the place where he knew that valiant men were.
      17 The men of the city went out, and fought with Joab. Some of the people fell, even of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.
      18 Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war;
      19 and he commanded the messenger, saying, "When you have finished telling all the things concerning the war to the king,
      20 it shall be that, if the king's wrath arise, and he asks you, 'Why did you go so near to the city to fight? Didn't you know that they would shoot from the wall?
      21 who struck Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? Didn't a woman cast an upper millstone on him from the wall, so that he died at Thebez? Why did you go so near the wall?' then you shall say, 'Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.'"
      22 So the messenger went, and came and showed David all that Joab had sent him for.
      23 The messenger said to David, "The men prevailed against us, and came out to us into the field, and we were on them even to the entrance of the gate.
      24 The shooters shot at your servants from off the wall; and some of the king's servants are dead, and your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also."
      25 Then David said to the messenger, "Thus you shall tell Joab, 'Don't let this thing displease you, for the sword devours one as well as another. Make your battle stronger against the city, and overthrow it.' Encourage him."
      26 When the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she made lamentation for her husband.
      27 When the mourning was past, David sent and took her home to his house, and she became his wife, and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased Yahweh.

      2 Samuel 12

      1 Yahweh sent Nathan to David. He came to him, and said to him, "There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor.
      2 The rich man had very many flocks and herds,
      3 but the poor man had nothing, except one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and raised. It grew up together with him, and with his children. It ate of his own food, drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was to him like a daughter.
      4 A traveler came to the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man who had come to him, but took the poor man's lamb, and dressed it for the man who had come to him."
      5 David's anger was greatly kindled against the man, and he said to Nathan, "As Yahweh lives, the man who has done this is worthy to die!
      6 He shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity!"
      7 Nathan said to David, "You are the man. This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says: 'I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul.
      8 I gave you your master's house, and your master's wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that would have been too little, I would have added to you many more such things.
      9 Why have you despised the word of Yahweh, to do that which is evil in his sight? You have struck Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and have taken his wife to be your wife, and have slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.
      10 Now therefore the sword will never depart from your house, because you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.'
      11 "This is what Yahweh says: 'Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them to your neighbor, and he will lie with your wives in the sight of this sun.
      12 For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.'"
      13 David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against Yahweh." Nathan said to David, "Yahweh also has put away your sin. You will not die.
      14 However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to Yahweh's enemies to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you shall surely die."
      15 Nathan departed to his house. Yahweh struck the child that Uriah's wife bore to David, and it was very sick.
      16 David therefore begged God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night on the earth.
      17 The elders of his house arose beside him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.
      18 It happened on the seventh day, that the child died. The servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead; for they said, "Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spoke to him, and he didn't listen to our voice. How will he then harm himself, if we tell him that the child is dead?"
      19 But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David perceived that the child was dead; and David said to his servants, "Is the child dead?" They said, "He is dead."
      20 Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his clothing; and he came into the house of Yahweh, and worshiped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he ate.
      21 Then his servants said to him, "What is this that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive; but when the child was dead, you rose up and ate bread."
      22 He said, "While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, 'Who knows whether Yahweh will not be gracious to me, that the child may live?'
      23 But now he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me."
      24 David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in to her, and lay with her. She bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. Yahweh loved him;
      25 and he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he named him Jedidiah, for Yahweh's sake.

      1 וַיְהִי֩ לִתְשׁוּבַ֨ת הַשָּׁנָ֜ה לְעֵ֣ת ׀ צֵ֣את הַמַּלְאֿכִ֗ים וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח דָּוִ֡ד אֶת־יוֹאָב֩ וְאֶת־עֲבָדָ֨יו עִמּ֜וֹ וְאֶת־כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וַיַּשְׁחִ֙תוּ֙ אֶת־בְּנֵ֣י עַמּ֔וֹן וַיָּצֻ֖רוּ עַל־רַבָּ֑ה וְדָוִ֖ד יוֹשֵׁ֥ב בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃
      2 וַיְהִ֣י ׀ לְעֵ֣ת הָעֶ֗רֶב וַיָּ֨קָם דָּוִ֜ד מֵעַ֤ל מִשְׁכָּבוֹ֙ וַיִּתְהַלֵּךְ֙ עַל־גַּ֣ג בֵּית־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַיַּ֥רְא אִשָּׁ֛ה רֹחֶ֖צֶת מֵעַ֣ל הַגָּ֑ג וְהָ֣אִשָּׁ֔ה טוֹבַ֥ת מַרְאֶ֖ה מְאֹֽד׃
      3 וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח דָּוִ֔ד וַיִּדְרֹ֖שׁ לָֽאִשָּׁ֑ה וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הֲלוֹא־זֹאת֙ בַּת־שֶׁ֣בַע בַּת־אֱלִיעָ֔ם אֵ֖שֶׁת אוּרִיָּ֥ה הַחִתִּֽי׃
      4 וַיִּשְׁלַח֩ דָּוִ֨ד מַלְאָכִ֜ים וַיִּקָּחֶ֗הָ וַתָּב֤וֹא אֵלָיו֙ וַיִּשְׁכַּ֣ב עִמָּ֔הּ וְהִ֥יא מִתְקַדֶּ֖שֶׁת מִטֻּמְאָתָ֑הּ וַתָּ֖שָׁב אֶל־בֵּיתָֽהּ׃
      5 וַתַּ֖הַר הָֽאִשָּׁ֑ה וַתִּשְׁלַח֙ וַתַּגֵּ֣ד לְדָוִ֔ד וַתֹּ֖אמֶר הָרָ֥ה אָנֹֽכִי׃
      6 וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח דָּוִד֙ אֶל־יוֹאָ֔ב שְׁלַ֣ח אֵלַ֔י אֶת־אֽוּרִיָּ֖ה הַחִתִּ֑י וַיִּשְׁלַ֥ח יוֹאָ֛ב אֶת־אֽוּרִיָּ֖ה אֶל־דָּוִֽד׃
      7 וַיָּבֹ֥א אוּרִיָּ֖ה אֵלָ֑יו וַיִּשְׁאַ֣ל דָּוִ֗ד לִשְׁל֤וֹם יוֹאָב֙ וְלִשְׁל֣וֹם הָעָ֔ם וְלִשְׁל֖וֹם הַמִּלְחָמָֽה׃
      8 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר דָּוִד֙ לְא֣וּרִיָּ֔ה רֵ֥ד לְבֵיתְךָ֖ וּרְחַ֣ץ רַגְלֶ֑יךָ וַיֵּצֵ֤א אֽוּרִיָּה֙ מִבֵּ֣ית הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַתֵּצֵ֥א אַחֲרָ֖יו מַשְׂאַ֥ת הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃
      9 וַיִּשְׁכַּ֣ב אוּרִיָּ֗ה פֶּ֚תַח בֵּ֣ית הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אֵ֖ת כָּל־עַבְדֵ֣י אֲדֹנָ֑יו וְלֹ֥א יָרַ֖ד אֶל־בֵּיתֽוֹ׃
      10 וַיַּגִּ֤דוּ לְדָוִד֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר לֹֽא־יָרַ֥ד אוּרִיָּ֖ה אֶל־בֵּית֑וֹ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר דָּוִ֜ד אֶל־אוּרִיָּ֗ה הֲל֤וֹא מִדֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ אַתָּ֣ה בָ֔א מַדּ֖וּעַ לֹֽא־יָרַ֥דְתָּ אֶל־בֵּיתֶֽךָ׃
      11 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אוּרִיָּ֜ה אֶל־דָּוִ֗ד הָ֠אָרוֹן וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֨ל וִֽיהוּדָ֜ה יֹשְׁבִ֣ים בַּסֻּכּ֗וֹת וַאדֹנִ֨י יוֹאָ֜ב וְעַבְדֵ֤י אֲדֹנִ֨י עַל־פְּנֵ֤י הַשָּׂדֶה֙ חֹנִ֔ים וַאֲנִ֞י אָב֧וֹא אֶל־בֵּיתִ֛י לֶאֱכֹ֥ל וְלִשְׁתּ֖וֹת וְלִשְׁכַּ֣ב עִם־אִשְׁתִּ֑י חַיֶּ֙ךָ֙ וְחֵ֣י נַפְשֶׁ֔ךָ אִֽם־אֶעֱשֶׂ֖ה אֶת־הַדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּֽה׃
      12 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר דָּוִ֜ד אֶל־אוּרִיָּ֗ה שֵׁ֥ב בָּזֶ֛ה גַּם־הַיּ֖וֹם וּמָחָ֣ר אֲשַׁלְּחֶ֑ךָּ וַיֵּ֨שֶׁב אוּרִיָּ֧ה בִירוּשָׁלִַ֛ם בַּיּ֥וֹם הַה֖וּא וּמִֽמָּחֳרָֽת׃
      13 וַיִּקְרָא־ל֣וֹ דָוִ֗ד וַיֹּ֧אכַל לְפָנָ֛יו וַיֵּ֖שְׁתְּ וַֽיְשַׁכְּרֵ֑הוּ וַיֵּצֵ֣א בָעֶ֗רֶב לִשְׁכַּ֤ב בְּמִשְׁכָּבוֹ֙ עִם־עַבְדֵ֣י אֲדֹנָ֔יו וְאֶל־בֵּית֖וֹ לֹ֥א יָרָֽד׃
      14 וַיְהִ֣י בַבֹּ֔קֶר וַיִּכְתֹּ֥ב דָּוִ֛ד סֵ֖פֶר אֶל־יוֹאָ֑ב וַיִּשְׁלַ֖ח בְּיַ֥ד אוּרִיָּֽה׃
      15 וַיִּכְתֹּ֥ב בַּסֵּ֖פֶר לֵאמֹ֑ר הָב֣וּ אֶת־אֽוּרִיָּ֗ה אֶל־מוּל֙ פְּנֵ֤י הַמִּלְחָמָה֙ הַֽחֲזָקָ֔ה וְשַׁבְתֶּ֥ם מֵאַחֲרָ֖יו וְנִכָּ֥ה וָמֵֽת׃
