Paul concède le fait, mais son assentiment n'est pas sans quelque ironie, car il repousse toute conclusion dont les gentils pourraient tirer orgueil.

C'est l'incrédulité des Juifs qui a été cause de leur retranchement ; et toi, gentil, tu subsistes (grec tu es debout) à cause de ta foi. (Romains 4.16) Ne t'enorgueillis donc point, mais crains (grec ne pense pas des choses élevées).

Le premier effet que doit produire sur le croyant la vue d'un sévère jugement de Dieu, c'est la crainte ; car quiconque professe de n'être sauvé que par la foi, sans les œuvres de la loi, reconnaît par là même qu'il est un misérable pécheur et qu'il ne subsiste que par la grâce toute gratuite de son Dieu.

Or, le moindre mouvement d'orgueil, par lequel un tel homme s'élève au-dessus de ses frères, l'expose au péril le plus redoutable, puisque, par cette complaisance en lui-même, il abandonne le seul terrain sur lequel il peut avoir quelque sécurité, la grâce de son Dieu.

Ainsi, même devant les manifestations les plus éclatantes de l'amour de Dieu, le chrétien ne doit se réjouir qu'avec tremblement, se rappelant que seul celui qui persévérera jusqu'à la fin sera sauvé. (1Corinthiens 10.12,Philippiens 2.12 ; Colossiens 1.23)
