Anne au sanctuaire de Silo
1 Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim Zophim, of the hill country of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite:2 and he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.3 This man went up out of his city from year to year to worship and to sacrifice to Yahweh of Armies in Shiloh. The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, priests to Yahweh, were there.4 When the day came that Elkanah sacrificed, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:5 but to Hannah he gave a double portion; for he loved Hannah, but Yahweh had shut up her womb.6 Her rival provoked her severely, to make her fret, because Yahweh had shut up her womb.7 As he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of Yahweh, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and didn't eat.8 Elkanah her husband said to her, "Hannah, why do you weep? Why don't you eat? Why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?"9 So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his seat by the doorpost of Yahweh's temple.10 She was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to Yahweh, and wept bitterly.11 She vowed a vow, and said, "Yahweh of Armies, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your handmaid, and remember me, and not forget your handmaid, but will give to your handmaid a boy, then I will give him to Yahweh all the days of his life, and no razor shall come on his head."12 It happened, as she continued praying before Yahweh, that Eli saw her mouth.13 Now Hannah spoke in her heart. Only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.14 Eli said to her, "How long will you be drunken? Put away your wine from you."15 Hannah answered, "No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I poured out my soul before Yahweh.16 Don't count your handmaid for a wicked woman; for I have been speaking out of the abundance of my complaint and my provocation."17 Then Eli answered, "Go in peace; and may the God of Israel grant your petition that you have asked of him."18 She said, "Let your handmaid find favor in your sight." So the woman went her way, and ate; and her facial expression wasn't sad any more.Naissance et enfance de Samuel
19 They rose up in the morning early, and worshiped before Yahweh, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and Yahweh remembered her.20 It happened, when the time had come, that Hannah conceived, and bore a son; and she named him Samuel, saying, "Because I have asked him of Yahweh."21 The man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer to Yahweh the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.22 But Hannah didn't go up; for she said to her husband, "Not until the child is weaned; then I will bring him, that he may appear before Yahweh, and stay there forever."23 Elkanah her husband said to her, "Do what seems good to you. Wait until you have weaned him; only may Yahweh establish his word." So the woman waited and nursed her son, until she weaned him.24 When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bulls, and one ephah of meal, and a bottle of wine, and brought him to Yahweh's house in Shiloh. The child was young.25 They killed the bull, and brought the child to Eli.26 She said, "Oh, my lord, as your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to Yahweh.27 For this child I prayed; and Yahweh has given me my petition which I asked of him.28 Therefore also I have granted him to Yahweh. As long as he lives he is granted to Yahweh." He worshiped Yahweh there. -

1 Il y avait un homme de Ramataïm-Tsophim, de la montagne d’Éphraïm, nommé Elqana, fils de Yeroham, fils d’Élihou, fils de Tohou, fils de Tsouph, Éphratien.2 Il avait deux femmes. Le nom de l’une était Anne et le nom de la deuxième Peninna ; Peninna avait des enfants, mais Anne n’avait point d’enfants.3 Chaque année, cet homme montait de sa ville à Silo, pour se prosterner devant l’Éternel des armées et pour lui offrir des sacrifices. Là se trouvaient les deux fils d’Éli, Hophni et Phinéas, sacrificateurs de l’Éternel.4 Le jour où Elqana offrait son sacrifice, il donnait des parts à sa femme Peninna, ainsi qu’à tous ses fils et à toutes ses filles.5 Mais il donnait à Anne une part double ; car il aimait Anne, que l’Éternel avait rendue stérile.6 Sa rivale ne cessait pas de lui causer du chagrin, pour qu’elle se révolte parce que l’Éternel l’avait rendue stérile.7 Toutes les années il en était ainsi. Chaque fois qu’Anne montait à la maison de l’Éternel, Peninna lui causait du chagrin de la même manière. Alors elle pleurait et ne mangeait pas.8 Elqana, son mari, lui dit : Anne, pourquoi pleures-tu et ne manges-tu pas ? Pourquoi ton cœur est-il attristé ? Est-ce que je ne vaux pas pour toi mieux que dix fils ?9 Anne se leva, après que l’on eut mangé et bu à Silo. Le sacrificateur Éli était assis sur un siège près du montant de la porte du temple de l’Éternel.10 Et, l’amertume dans l’âme, elle pria l’Éternel et pleura beaucoup.11 Elle fit un vœu et dit : Éternel des armées ! Si ton regard s’arrête sur l’humiliation de ta servante, si tu te souviens de moi et n’oublies pas ta servante, et si tu donnes un garçon à ta servante, je le donnerai à l’Éternel pour tous les jours de sa vie, et le rasoir ne passera pas sur sa tête.12 Comme elle multipliait ses prières devant l’Éternel, Éli observa sa bouche.13 Anne parlait dans son cœur ; seules ses lèvres remuaient, mais l’on n’entendait pas sa voix. Éli pensa qu’elle était ivre.14 Il lui dit : Jusques à quand seras-tu dans l’ivresse ? Fais passer ton vin.15 Anne répondit : Non, mon seigneur, je suis une femme à l’esprit affligé, et je n’ai bu ni vin ni liqueur forte ; mais j’épanchais mon âme devant l’Éternel.16 Ne prends pas ta servante pour une femme de rien, car c’est l’excès de ma douleur et de mon chagrin qui m’a fait parler jusqu’à présent.17 Éli reprit la parole et dit : Va en paix, et que le Dieu d’Israël te donne ce que tu lui as demandé !18 Elle dit : Que ta servante obtienne ta faveur ! Et cette femme poursuivit sa route. Elle mangea, et son visage ne fut plus le même.Naissance et enfance de Samuel
19 Ils se levèrent de bon matin et, après s’être prosternés devant l’Éternel, s’en retournèrent et revinrent dans leur maison à Rama. Elqana connut sa femme Anne, et l’Éternel se souvint d’elle.20 Dans le cours de l’année, Anne devint enceinte ; elle accoucha d’un fils, qu’elle appela du nom de Samuel, car, (dit-elle), je l’ai demandé à l’Éternel.21 Le mari, Elqana, monta ensuite avec toute sa famille, pour offrir à l’Éternel le sacrifice annuel et pour (accomplir) son vœu.22 Mais Anne ne monta pas. Car elle dit à son mari : Lorsque le garçon sera sevré, je le mènerai, afin qu’il soit présenté devant l’Éternel et qu’il reste là pour toujours.23 Elqana, son mari, lui dit : Fais ce qui te semblera bon, reste ici jusqu’à ce que tu l’aies sevré. Que l’Éternel accomplisse seulement sa parole ! Et la femme resta ; elle allaita son fils, jusqu’à ce qu’elle l’eût sevré.24 Quand elle l’eut sevré, elle le fit monter avec elle et prit trois taureaux, un épha de farine et une outre de vin. Elle le mena dans la maison de l’Éternel à Silo : le garçon était encore tout jeune.25 Ils égorgèrent le taureau et conduisirent le garçon à Éli.26 Anne dit : Pardon mon seigneur, aussi vrai que tu es vivant, je suis cette femme qui se trouvait placée ici près de toi pour prier l’Éternel.27 C’était en vue de ce garçon que je priais, et l’Éternel m’a donné ce que je lui demandais.28 Aussi, moi je veux le prêter à l’Éternel : il sera toute sa vie prêté à l’Éternel. Et ils se prosternèrent là devant l’Éternel. -
