Faut-il admettre, avec plusieurs exégètes (Ebrard, Meyer, Lechler), que cette application est simplement la conséquence naturelle qu'Etienne tire de tout son discours ?

Ou, avec Olshausen et d'autres, que ce brusque changement de ton fut provoqué par des marques d'impatience et de colère dans son auditoire ?

Cette dernière opinion nous paraît être la vraie.

Jusqu'ici Etienne avait exposé avec calme les vérités qui ressortent de l'histoire d'Israël, si le sanhédrin, constitué en cour de justice, l'avait écouté avec attention, eut-il été sage, ou même charitable, de provoquer, par ces dernières paroles, les orgueilleux préjugés de ce conseil ? Assurément Etienne ne l'aurait pas fait.

En outre, comment supposer qu'il aurait voulu terminer son discours sans exhorter ses auditeurs à la repentance et sans leur annoncer en Jésus la miséricorde de Dieu ?

Au lieu de cela, il ne mentionne le Juste que pour accabler ces chefs du peuple du souvenir de leur crime. (verset 52)

C'est qu'Etienne voyait la fureur peinte sur tous les visages, c'est qu'il fut interrompu par des murmures et des cris, c'est enfin qu'il prévit l'issue tragique du débat et que, dans son indomptable courage, il trouva qu'il n'y avait plus rien à ménager dans ces rebelles. Les versets versets 54,57 confirment cette explication.

- Le col roide est l'image d'un caractère inflexible, opiniâtre, rebelle.

Le peuple d'Israël se montrait alors tel. Ce mot ne se trouve qu'ici dans le Nouveau Testament, mais le terme hébreu qui y correspond est assez fréquent. (Voir Exode 33.3,5)

Etre incirconcis de cœur et d'oreilles, c'est se montrer incapable de sentir et même d'entendre la vérité. L'incirconcision était, chez les Juifs la marque du paganisme et de l'impureté, (Lévitique 26.41,Deutéronome 10.16) la circoncision le symbole de la purification du cœur. (Jérémie 4.4 ; 9.25 ; Romains 2.29)
