World English Bible Moreover he said, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look at God.

La dénomination par laquelle Dieu se désigne ici, est comme un pont jeté sur l'intervalle de quatre cents ans pendant lequel il ne s'était pas manifesté à Israël.

Parce qu'il craignait ; comparez 1Rois 19.13 ; Juges 13.22, etc. L'idée qu'on ne peut voir Dieu et vivre (Exode 23.20), se retrouve chez les Grecs dans la fable de Sémélé. Chez les Hébreux, ce n'est pas seulement la puissance de Dieu qui fait craindre à l'homme de le voir ; c'est surtout la conscience de son état de péché (Esaïe 6.5). Quand un homme voit Dieu sans mourir, c'est par une grâce spéciale (Exode 24.11).
