Le devoir de la bienfaisance ressortait déjà du précepte d'aimer son prochain comme soi-même (Lévitique 19.18) ; il était en outre formulé expressément Lévitique 25.35 et Deutéronome 15.11 (ouvrir sa main à l'affligé) ; comparez Lévitique 19.9-10 ; Esaïe 58.6-7.

Point d'intérêt : comparez Exode 22.25 ; Lévitique 25.36. Le Deutéronome permet seulement de prendre un intérêt de l'étranger (Deutéronome 23.20). Cette défense supposait un genre de vie extrêmement simple et primitif, un état social essentiellement agricole, où le négoce ne tenait presque aucune place, où par conséquent le prêt n'était nullement affaire de spéculation ou de placement, mais uniquement un acte de bienveillance, une assistance temporaire qu'il eût été indigne de faire payer. Ezéchiel répète simplement une loi qui devait remonter aux premiers temps de l'existence du peuple.
