Il est difficile de croire que cette parole doive être attribuée à Adam, puisque les expressions de père et de mère supposent une expérience qu'il n'avait pas.

Matthieu 19.5 (d'après la traduction exacte), Jésus la met dans la bouche de Dieu même, sans doute en ce sens qu'il l'attribue à l'auteur inspiré du récit. Ce serait donc une réflexion ajoutée par ce dernier, comme il s'en trouve plusieurs dans le cours de là Genèse, adjonctions qui commencent ordinairement, comme celle-ci, par al-ken, c'est pour cela (26.33 ; 32.32).

L'homme laissera... L'expérience a prouvé la sagesse de cette direction divine ; une nouvelle famille doit dès l'abord se détacher du tronc qui l'a portée pour devenir tronc à son tour.

Il s'attachera à sa femme. Le principe de la monogamie est implicitement renfermé dans cette parole. Comparez Matthieu 19.6. C'est ici la fondation de la famille sous sa forme normale.

Une seule chair. Comparez 1Corinthiens 6.16 les conséquences que saint Paul tire de cette parole contre le crime de l'impureté.
