On peut traduire : tout sarment qui est en moi, relié en apparence au cep, et qui ne porte pas de fruit ; ou bien : tout sarment qui ne porte pas de fruit en moi par son union organique avec moi.

Il y a, dans les ceps de vigne, des rejetons sauvages qui ne portent jamais de fruit ; le vigneron les retranche, afin qu'ils n'absorbent pas inutilement la sève. Un homme peut, de diverses manières, appartenir extérieurement à Jésus-Christ en se rattachant à son Eglise, en professant la foi chrétienne sans avoir part à la vie sanctifiante du Christ.

Tôt ou tard, il se verra retranché, exclu de cette communion apparente avec le Sauveur. Mais les vrais sarments portent du fruit. Ceux-ci, Dieu les nettoie, les purifie, ou selon la plupart de nos versions, il les émonde.

Nous adoptons le premier de ces termes pour faire ressortir, comme dans le grec, la relation de cet acte avec les mots qui suivent : Déjà vous êtes nets. (verset 3)

Jésus veut dire que ces sarments fertiles doivent être débarrassés de tout jet inutile, et même d'une partie de leur feuillage qui empêcherait le fruit de mûrir. C'est Dieu encore qui poursuit, dans ses enfants, cette œuvre de purification et de sanctification continue, il l'accomplit par sa Parole, (verset 3) par son Esprit, par tous les moyens de sa grâce. Et si cela ne suffit pas, le céleste cultivateur emploie l'instrument tranchant et douloureux des épreuves, de la souffrance et des renoncements qu'il impose à ses enfants. Car ce qu'il veut à tout prix, c'est qu'ils portent plus de fruit.
