L'amour qui est ici rappelé est celui du peuple pour son Dieu, et non pas, comme ce serait le sens d'après la version d'Ostervald, l'amour de Dieu pour son peuple. Le temps de la jeunesse et des fiançailles que rappelle le prophète avec une émotion contenue, doit être limité à l'époque même de la sortie d'Egypte, où le peuple suivit avec foi le serviteur que l'Eternel lui avait envoyé. Cette foi que le peuple montra à l'Eternel et à Moise, est mentionnée à trois reprises : Exode 4.31 ; 14.31 ; 19.8. Comparez Hébreux 11.26. La nation d'Israël sortit d'Egypte comme la fiancée de Jéhova ; elle devint son épouse devant l'autel de Sinaï ; mais ce fut dès ce moment que les révoltes ouvertes succédèrent aux simples murmures.
