Voici, j'enverrai, et je prendrai tous les peuples du Nord, dit l'Éternel, et j'enverrai vers Nébucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, mon serviteur ; et je les ferai venir contre ce pays, et contre ses habitants, et contre toutes ces nations d'alentour, et je les vouerai à l'interdit, et j'en ferai un objet de désolation, de moquerie, des déserts éternels.

Toutes les tribus du septentrion : comparez 1.15. Dieu réunit ces peuples du nord sous le sceptre de Nébucadnetsar, pour les amener tous ensemble contre Jérusalem.

Mon serviteur. Il est bien remarquable que ce titre auguste de serviteur de l'Eternel, qui dans la dernière partie d'Esaïe s'applique tour à tour au peuple d'Israël et à son Messie, soit donné ici à un roi païen, exécuteur aveugle des plans divins. Dieu veut légitimer en quelque sorte le pouvoir de Nébucadnetsar sur son peuple, qu'il lui livre. On peut rapprocher de ce titre celui, plus noble encore, d'oint de l'Eternel, qui est appliqué à Cyrus dans la dernière partie d'Esaïe (chapitre 45). Nébucadnetsar fut l'instrument, de la destruction du peuple, annoncée par les prophètes ; Cyrus, celui de la restauration promise par eux.

A l'interdit : le même mot qui avait été appliqué jadis à l'extermination des Cananéens. En Dieu il n'y a pas d'acception de personnes.
