Ma loi. Comme expression de la sainte volonté de Dieu, elle restera à jamais l'essence du contrat entre Dieu et l'homme ; elle ne sera ni changée, ni abolie (Matthieu 5.17-19 ; Luc 16.17). Seulement, au lieu d'être imposée à l'homme par une volonté étrangère et comme une obligation extérieure, elle s'emparera de son cœur et deviendra l'expression de la volonté même du fidèle.

Sur leur cœur. A Sinaï, la loi avait été écrite sur les tables de pierre ; sous cette forme elle se présentait comme une lettre impérative, qui rencontrait dans l'homme une volonté opposée à elle. Par la venue du Saint-Esprit, déjà promise dans Joël 2.28 et suivants, ce conflit de volontés entre Dieu et l'homme prend fin. Le contenu de la loi, ce que Dieu veut, devient ce que l'homme veut. Jésus-Christ, le premier, a réalisé cet idéal du parfait accord entre la volonté humaine et la volonté divine (Jean 4.31). La nouvelle naissance produit cette même harmonie avec la loi dans le cœur de l'enfant de Dieu. Le conflit est apaisé ; et à l'alliance de la lettre, qui n'était que temporaire, se substitue celle de l'Esprit, qui est éternelle.

Je serai leur Dieu... en toute vérité cette fois. Ainsi sera accomplie la promesse du verset 1.
