Invitation ironique à Edom, de célébrer la destruction de Juda, son rival. Edom : le plus acharné d'entre les voisins d'Israël, le frère ennemi ; comparez Jérémie 49.7 et suivants, et tout le livre du prophète Abdias. Psaumes 137.7 montre quelle part active ce peuple avait prise à la destruction et au pillage de Jérusalem.

Le pays de Uts : patrie de Job ; ce pays doit avoir été situé à l'extrémité du pays d'Edom, du côté du désert, vers l'orient ; comparez Jérémie 25.20.

A toi aussi : allusion directe à Jérémie 25.17 et suivants. Maintenant l'ironie cesse : que l'ennemi triomphe aujourd'hui ; le jugement fondra un jour sur lui, tandis qu'Israël, abattu à cette heure, se relèvera de ses ruines (verset 22).

Edom ne pourra refuser de boire la coupe de la colère divine ; alors il sera couvert d'une ignominie telle que celle d'un homme qui dans son ivresse découvre lui-même sa nudité.

Nous pouvons voir prophétiquement dans ce texte, la fin des afflictions de Sion : non pas l’ampleur de la punition qu’elle avait méritée, mais ce que Dieu avait déterminé de lui infliger. Un terme allait être mis aux triomphes d'Édom.

Toutes les persécutions de l'église et du croyant auront bientôt une fin : le sort malheureux de leurs ennemis approche. Le Seigneur mettra au grand jour leurs péchés, et ils devront subir alors, le châtiment éternel.

Dans ce texte, Édom représente tous les ennemis de l'église. La corruption et le péché d'Israël, dénoncés ouvertement par le prophète, justifient pleinement les jugements de l’Éternel. Ceci montre bien le besoin de la Grâce offerte en Jésus-Christ, rendue nécessaire par le péché et la corruption de toute l'humanité !
