Le but de cette parabole, comme de la suivante, est de motiver (car) l'exhortation, impliquée dans la règle précédente, à s'examiner soi-même pour voir si l'on est capable de remplir ces sévères conditions.

Etre disciple de Jésus, (versets 26,27) le suivre, l'imiter en toutes choses, jusqu'à la croix, jusqu'à la mort, est une tâche difficile, bien plus au-dessus des forces de l'homme naturel que bâtir une tour ou une forteresse n'est au-dessus de la fortune d'un pauvre ; ce n'est donc pas avec l'enthousiasme éphémère d'une première émotion religieuse qu'on doit s'engager dans cette difficile carrière.

Il faut s'asseoir, se recueillir, calculer la dépense, avant de faire hautement profession d'être disciple de Jésus. Sans cette précaution, on court le risque de provoquer les moqueries du monde et de devenir une cause d'opprobre pour l'Evangile.
