Les serviteurs, qui, dans la parabole, représentent les disciples de Jésus, avaient demandé avec étonnement et douleur : D'où vient qu'il y a de l'ivraie ?

Maintenant que nous savons ce qu'est le champ, nous pouvons dire que c'est là la question des questions, le problème désolant de toute philosophie et de toute théologie : d'où vient le mal dans ce monde qui est le champ de Dieu, et où il n'a pu semer que le bien ?

La réponse du Sauveur est la seule vraie théodicée. Elle écarte d'un mot tous les systèmes qui, d'une façon ou d'une autre, font remonter le mal jusqu'à Dieu, et qui par là touchent au blasphème.

Le mal ne vient pas non plus de l'homme, il n'est pas essentiel à sa nature : donc il y a pour lui espoir de guérison. Il vient du dehors, d'un ennemi qui est le diable.

Cet enseignement de Jésus est conforme à toute l'Ecriture, conforme aussi à la saine raison : "Le péché, qui n'existe que dans une volonté vivante et personnelle, ne peut avoir son origine que dans une volonté personnelle qui en a été la source." R. Stier.

Si l'on objecte que cette solution ne fait que reculer la question, nous y consentons. Mais l'exégèse n'a pas à remonter plus haut. Ceux qui voudront le faire, trouveront toujours une solution possible et rationnelle dans la volonté d'un être libre qui, dès lors, d'ange peut devenir démon.

Quelque opinion qu'on veuille donc se faire sur l'existence personnelle de cet ennemi, nul ne peut nier que Jésus ne l'enseigne de la manière la plus positive. Même la fausse théorie d'une accommodation aux préjugés de son siècle est ici parfaitement inadmissible.

En effet,

1° Jésus fait entendre cette déclaration précise, non dans la parabole, mais pour expliquer la parabole et nous en indiquer le sens.

2° Rien ne provoque cette déclaration, donnée spontanément, non devant le peuple, mais dans le cercle intime des disciples. (verset 36)

3° Le diable est nommé comme l'auteur personnel d'une action positive, comme source et origine du mal dans le monde, par opposition à un autre être personnel, le fils de l'homme, auteur et origine du bien.

Nous ne nions pas qu'on puisse être chrétien sans admettre l'existence personnelle du diable, mais on ne peut nier non plus que pour cela il faille fausser tous les principes d'une saine exégèse ou rejeter l'autorité de Jésus-Christ lui-même.

Grec : la consommation ou l'achèvement du siècle (aïôn), c'est-à-dire du temps actuel, de la période qui doit s'écouler jusqu'au retour de Christ pour le jugement définitif.

C'est ce que nos versions rendent par le terme peu exact de fin du monde. Comparer Matthieu 13.40,49 ; 24.3 ; 28.20 ; Hébreux 9.26.
